The M1730 is pretty well built, the base is very rigid and flex free....but it isn't a notebook to be dragged around and thrown into bags and the like,it gets scratched very easily, the glossy finish on the sides of the palm rest chip easily, the screen creaks when opened or twisted, probably due to being made wholly of hard plastic with those lighting panels attached.....I'm pretty certain that it would look pretty daggy after a year or so of mobile use, going by the blemish's on mine after 4 or 5 months.

Lol...I love your selective quoting,I requoted the whole two posts where I mentioned build quality for clarification...relative bits highlighted in red.

Again, the negative comments were in comparison to the previous generation precisions and if you had bothered reading all of it you would have seen that....sure you can deform the lid but its still a lot better than average in that regard, and no one else has mentioned any of the other things......so maybe I'm just a bit fussy and had too high of a expectation

Yep, CD cases would be just fine! Maybe even next to the laptop itself (getting greedy here :p).

Was this under XP or Vista (1440x900, I assume)? I've noticed that results in XP are better than under Vista. You should try using a temperature monitoring program to confirm GPU and CPU temps.

Can someone who has a M4400 answer me this please - I was configuring a unit on the Dell Canada website. Got the option for the "15.4” UltraSharp™ Wide WXGA+ (1440x900) LED Display" option of course. :) But when I get to the webcam option I see "WXGA LCD with Integrated 2.0 Megapixel Webcam w/ microphone "?? Does this mean if you get the webcam you get downgraded back to a basic screen option? That would suck... When I was done configuring the unit, the Dell site did not indicate any errors with the config. Kind of weird.
    Any ideas or thoughts?

    Thanks,
    Shawn

integrated webcam with microphone [Included in Price]

No webcam with microphone [subtract $30]

Those are the options in the U.S so I'm guessing they just put it like that... For who knows why... I highly don't think it'll take your LED screen away

? In Germany the only option is "Integrated 0.3 Mega Pixel Camera with Microphone for CCFL PCD Panel"
That was one of the reasons I didnt get the camera. Anyway, I'm getting my camera-less, T9400, WXGA, 9cell M4400 tomorrow :)

yea thats interesting, in malaysia only 0.3 cam is available...

no biggie for me though as i just use the webcam for msn/skype.

i reckon if you want a quality webcam its best to just get a high end external one.
