yea, about M6300 seems to start off at $2500's i dont think Dell is becoming generous all of a sudden... even in light of the new M6400 coming soon.

as for Clownish, yes i understood your comment was in regard to the Studio 17... and i agree... but for $1700, if it lasts 3-4 years, i'll be happy...

    Studio over the Vostro?

well, vostro got the specs, and even the size... but it just bugs the hell out of me to see that ****ed num pad stuck right next to the standard keys...
i guess i suffer from OCD or whatever you call it... it just bothers me.
and i guess it just makes me yawn... i am somewhat attracted to the clownish features... :D

well, i've bought into a boutique laptop... many have called it a overpriced sager/clevo with a fancy paint job... if you look strictly from an economics standpoint, they are right... the tech is nothing new, but the ownership experience is something difference... and it was fun and i enjoyed it.

so my Clevo D900K re-branded as VoodooPC u709 was my pride and joy for the past 3 years... no probs... all worked fine...
    heavy as hell,
    beautiful as heaven... i guess...

but recently, my Mobo seems to have died out... in Paris, during a business trip...
after 1 replacement, the replacement mobo recognized only 1 GB of 2 GB... so went back in...
2nd replacement went fine... but then suddenly the MB died again... and it's going in for 3rd MB replacement.

lucky i had the 3 year, eh?

service has been great... only good things to say about the folks at voodoo... at least in my personal experience...

but in light of recent laptop woes... it got me to think...
tech is not going to be futureproof... right?
so unless i'm foolishly head-over-heels in love with something... i'll just stick to a "business" solution for my laptop needs... especially due to my constant travels...

hence, at that moment, the Studio 17 fit the bill... $1700 compared to almost $7000 for my voodoo... and so replacing it will not be as painful...

voodoo, when it comes back, will be used in my home for gaming... :D

holy crap dude, 7000? was that a typo?

lol....if you spent that much in the past why not just get the 6400 then:p

the post is a bit confusing, are you referring to the studio as a business laptop?

with heavy use, the enterprise lines dont seem to wear out as fast as the consumer lines, imo from my own usage. but then again im an extreme example being a bit of a road warrior.

i'm moving this to my "indecisive" thread... and try to keep this more M4400 related...

so it is correct to say, in terms of build quality and overall reliability:

    Precision > Vostro > Consumer/XPS?

for some reason, i thought the Vostro was a economic, stripped down, no frills business models... kinda like the cars they sell to pizza chains for use as their delivery cars.

    I have to do too.

I asked for access WUXGA and FX1700.

The answer is such that WUXGA is available but the question on fx1700, I have not received a response:(

Build quality and reliability are different things.
Unfortunately, the casing of the new prescisions seems have been quite thin, sacrificinig ruggedness. They look nice and pretty and light, but not no rugged now.
Also XPS is of higher quality than consumer laptops.

Vostro I think is more rugged than precison, but its heavier, and more plastic.
So build quality of Vostro is less than that of precison, but its more rugged.

    Ruggedness:
    Latitude=thinkpad > Vostro > XPS > Precision

    Build Quality:
    Latitude=Precision =thinkpad > XPS > Vostro

    Whoa there batman!
I was the one who said this precision was made of thinner alloy than the last models, and I was talking about the lid in particular......and in comparison to the M65/4300/D820/D830,not to vostro's,XPS's or inspirons

I've had two vostro's,a 1500/1310 and two 1730's [one was returned] since my last precision [M65] and none of them was as nicely made or robust as the M65 OR M4400 imo.
BTW the 14&15 precisions and latitudes are built exactly the same [and have been for the last 4 generations] apart from the outside lid,so I don't know why you would be ranking one at the top and the other on the bottom.

I do agree that build quality and reliabilty are two different things though.

Can someone who owns an M4400 post a picture of the power brick, preferably next to something that would provide a good indication of size? I'd like to see how it compares to the ginormous 150W brick that came with my Inspiron 9100! :p

    M4400 got a 3DMark06 score of 5801 with stock drivers =/

Gonna test it with laptopvideo2go's drivers and see if it works any better. GPU was very cool btw.

Oh c'mon, the 1730s should be quite rugged !!

This is what u said about the M4400:
That is not a good thing for the lcd, and hence my lower ranking for the ruggedness of current crop of precisions.

You said it, its because of the outside lid. Note that I ranked precisions at the top wrt to buld quality, I only ranked them lower on ruggedness scale.
Easily deformed lid = easy pressure damage from books etc in backpack.
