of course they charged me for it... if i got it for free.. it would not be an issue for me... ha ha ha

i ordered it, cancelled it... but yet received it... and curiosity took over, opened it and it was nice...

i have a different thread opened about it... love to have your thoughts... i'm confused... can't make up my mind...

i think my hopes of M6400 is dying out quickly... fear of not being able to buy a system, even low-mid spec for $2000 range...

There are only thermal pads on the graphics memory chips and the chipset.....the GPU and CPU only have paste and lots of it from dell,so that makes it easier.
I don't have any pictures KingHong1970 but dell support has the service manual up on their site now......if you've done this sort of thing before, you will find it very easy, just make sure you have AS5 or something before you remove anything as I don't think Dell's thermal paste would work a second time around very well.....but then that goes without saying really

Lol thermal paste is not a "user-upgradable" portion under Dells policy, is it?

I seriously doubt a tech would even notice or bother about it,unless you made a mess of it......you are in most cases, helping their cause, not hindering it.
If anybody is going to worry about doing it,or is not confident of doing it right,I suggest you don't....end of story.;)

    @KingHong1970
I don't really like telling people what to buy with their own money, but from your other thread, you seem happy with 17" as a size of notebook, you don't play a lot of games that will really utilise the extra D3D performance with the M4400 over the S17,your software isn't of the openGL api variety to benefit from a FX Quadro.
I don't really know what your reasons are for wanting the M4400 ? if its the looks,I can understand that, the studio's all look a bit on the clownish side to me,but as we all know, one persons nirvana can be anothers yuck:)

The two of them seem quite far removed from each other as to what someone wants in a notebook...but?

    tyvm for your opinion Weegie...

i am very much stuck on 17" size...

call it foolish but of the reason i've looked upon the "workstation" grade laptops is that i've recently had my boutique laptop that i used to carry with such joy... die out on me... twice, each when i was overseas, in the middle of my business trip...

i guess i am looking for old reliable more than groundbreaking speed and uber gaming performance... heck, my reflexes will not be able to keep up with all thems youngins...

hence i was looking forward to the reputation of the "workstation" laptops.

really, if M6400 was out, and i could get it for $2500 range for a base, and upgrade parts in aftermarket... i'd jump on it...

but i dont think it's going to happen...

i did consider the M6300 as well... Dell will not budge from their price... so...

but mainly due to price of around $1700... i think i'll stick with the studio, wait on the M4400 to get a glimpse...

    it is tad clownish... eh?

as for replacing TIM... i'm quite comfy in doing so... just wondering about voiding warranty.

Well, there's nothing foolish about expecting better build quality, support and worldwide service for the business models, although Dell tend to give everybody pretty good service as they probably realise consumer's have as big,if not bigger mouths than the business buyers.

The Latitude E6500 is a much cheaper alternative for 15" though,to somebody who doesn't want the midrange openGL graphics, but still wants the same level of build quality and support [same case, except for screen cover],but since your a 17" fan,the points moot really.

Like yourself,I will be surprised if the M6400 is a reasonable price, given what they're making available to spec on it,haha, such is the way of the world......I'd like a porsche 911 also, but reality is a 90's model toyota :D
I wouldn't go for 17" again anyway,as much as I enjoyed the xps m1730 and playing games at amazing settings....the size just doesn't fit my work and reality as much as the M4400 does.

If I may ask,why did you choose the Studio over the vostro 1710 business model ?

With clownish,I was meaning the Studio series and its.....colourful options, the precision is about as basic looking in a nice way as you can get really, which is my preference, but I'll be interested in what you have to say about the M4400 when it arrives, and if it convinces you to take reduction in screen size.

Re the thermal paste,I guess if they wanted to be really hard nosed about it they could knock you back on warranty, but I've never heard of it happening with Dell before, and would surprise me greatly if they did so as long it was applied correctly.

I don't sorry rhinos,it just says september in the info pdf.

You would be best to ask dell themselves, although I can't see you getting much sense from a sales rep to be honest, until its actually an option sitting on their screen in front of them.

Die out how ? The workstation laptops use the same chips as the consumer laptops, so HDD/mobo can fail just as often in them too (the wireless card in my precision M90 has failed...).
