If you had to live with a badly scratched up laptop for a year, you too would be irritated by any scratches.

Thing is, it's quite an expensive laptop, a business-class at it, so one would expect more from it. My three-year-old ThinkPad T60 is still spotless till this day.

I agree with you. I spent so much time choosing a laptop for built quality and now it gets scratches easily... I was pretty disappointed with Dell too. They actually advertised that the paint was durable. Well, the paint on the rest of the laptop besides the cover seems very durable, but what's the point of making a nice looking cover when it gets scratched so easily? I think you should get a replacement (and hopefully it won't have scratches) and then spent some money on protecting the laptop in day to day use. Otherwise, consider some other laptop. To be fair, I really love the E6400 in every way aside from the poor paint job. It does seem very sturdy.

I still see no scratches on my E6400's cover after over a month of use and travel.

There was a hint of a scratch on the palm rest caused by the edge of the display bezel. I think I have this under control by putting some small pieces of black electrical tape on the bezel. These are barel noticeable but should stop hard plastic hitting the paint.

Just as a note for everyone...right now I have two E6400's, manufactured about a month apart.

And the paint finish on the newer one feels less smooth, almost slightly rough. I think Dell must have read about all the complaints and switched to a higher quality finish.

Do I understand correctly? Less smooth = better?
I would be in favour of a rougher paint finish on the base so there's better grip when carrying the closed notebook, but I would have thought the brished metal finish needs to be smooth.

Then either I'm unlucky or you're lucky. Hopefully it's because I'm unlucky because I don't like the idea that a business class laptop gets scratches so easily.

Oops, I already dropped off my original laptop so I can't compare, but I did not notice any differences when I first compared them. Are you sure it's not just your fingerprints that caused the original to be more smooth? =) In any case, I am not taking any chances with my replacement.

I don't have any noticeable scratches at the moment, but I'm a bit paranoid that I won't be able to keep mine scratch free.. So is there a sleeve that fits well? I've been waiting for sfbags to release a model according to the E6400 size, but I haven't seen any word of the E6400 on the sytems page.

I am working with SFBags to confirm a final case size that works. I'm sending off my evaluation of a few sizes today, we'll come to a mutual agreement soon.
