You want to return a laptop for 2 scratches you've made? Good luck with support! I guess you could send it back under the 30 satisfaction warranty (there is one of these at Dell, isn't there?).

I've learned that the more you are careful with a something, the more it gets scratched lol. Same goes with cells, etc... Ah man I was devastated when my pristine new iphone I don't know why got out of my belt case and fell on the sidewalk. My new 3G got a dent on its side and it almost never goes out the case. I sure don't know how it happend.

Well, the two scratches aren't very visible but it bothers me a lot because my old laptop was pretty scratched up and I just cannot stand scratches anymore. I send it back giving a freezing system (the whole thing freezes randomly) and other minor problems as reasons (not the two scratches I made, hehe). I just hope that the new system I buy would not have other issues like poor speakers or a whining harddrive. And the thing is (I don't know if other laptops have this problem) that it gets scratched REALLY easily. I think I really want to try out that zagg.com film thing when they have pre-cuts for the E6400. Or maybe I'll just order a custom fit for my laptop.

Edit: Oh ****, I didn't realize that they'll charge up to a 15% restocking fee if they can't find anything obviously wrong with the laptop. I thought I could just return it if I didn't like it. I guess I'll just be really really really careful with it until I send it to zagg.com so that they can put the invisible shield on it.

Actually, the paint/finish on the E series appears to not be very durable. My scratches were caused by the LCD screen coming up against the chassis of the laptop during NORMAL usage. I never slammed the screen or anything, yet they showed up within days.

If there were a way to protect just the palmrest area of the notebook, that would be all I need.

    Design defects are problems.

    WAIT...I just had a thought.

MAYBE, we could apply a coat of clear paint to the laptop? It would be one heck of a modification to make though, and it would be tough.

    But that's an option.

I assume no responsibility should you screw up your notebook when doing this.

    I have found your solution:

    http://www.avery.com/avery/en_us/Pr...nnel=c042fd03ab30a110VgnVCM1000002118140aRCRD

Use clear sticker paper. 8.5x11" and you'd just have to cut as needed to fit the laptop.

Yeah, I agree with you Greg that Dell should give me a new cover because of their poor quality paint, but I don't know how I am going to convince them that it's their fault. I really don't want to be charged with that restocking fee for a couple of scratches.

Edit: Um, that sounds way too risky to me. I'll rather spend a little money and get the zagg people to put their film on my laptop.

I told them (and it was true) that the palmrest had cosmetic damage and requested a replacement, but told them there was no need to send out a tech as I'd replace it myself.

Palmrest was here 24 hours later.

But I'm still returning this one for other reasons.

Hmm, but mine is scratched on the lid and I think replacing the cover would be a heck of a job. I don't know. How difficult do you think it is to replace the cover on my own? Maybe I'll try calling dell and get a new cover if it isn't that difficult to replace.

So far, Dells business support has been fantastic. Waaaay different then the home support. I automatically get in touch with the perfect person to speak to. They wanted to give me replacement screen hinges cause I told them I didn't like them, LOL.

I was lying though, and figured it would be too much time wasted to replace them anyways - strongest hinges Ive ever had

@Eivuwan: Call Dells business support, it's unlikely they will send you an LCD cover to replace, it's not the same as a keyboard or dvd drive. They are going to send a technician for that, they "care" when you buy business models.

You know what, RAM, that is exactly how I feel about Dell support...and why I continue to buy them even after all the trouble I've had with laptops in the past.

To be fair, most laptops were never a problem. However, I did get a lemon or two in the last five years let me tell you.

Anyway, I'm going to try that clear sticker stuff when my new E6400 comes in and I'll report back.

Hmm, but I only order the lowest price warranty which does not cover on site repairs. What do I say to them? Do I say something about the paint job being poor quality or something?
