Aw, I don't know much about warranties but if it says no onsite repair I guess that means no free technicians :(

If you're going to try to get a replacement since its their fault, you dont only tell them its poor paint quality, you have to tell them how frustrating it is since you expected a more top notch laptop and how you're not satisfied with the system.

Believe it or not, I've been contemplating a purchase of the D630 instead. Still thinking, but I hope to decide 100% by tomorrow.

Thanks I♥RAM. I never had to do these kind of things before. I guess I'll call the rep and try my best. I guess getting it repaired is better than going through the whole returning thing.

Wow, are you thaatt dissatisfied with the E6400? The only thing that bothers me is the poor paint job and vista (but I'll install linux eventually so I don't care about vista issues). I don't know how the D630 is like compared to the E6400, but I can't imagine going back to an older model after playing around with the new and cooler one.

It isn't that I'm unsatisfied, I'm just contemplating all my options. A D630 at Dell outlet is around $900-1000, a good bit less than the E6400 at the configuration I'm looking for.

Right now my E6400 has 5-6% of its battery left, giving me a warning (battery light blinking incessantly)....and Vista (which uses a bit more power I assume) is still estimating 20-30min of battery life right now. That is exactly what I need in a laptop, which is why I'm still heavily considering the E6400. The D630 could not do that.

Oh, difficult choose...red, blue, and black are now options for me....which one? :D

Well, believe it or not, if they had some nice green color, I would get that. hehe Red is too angry and blue is too serene (and a bit boring) so I stayed with black.

My E6400 has now had 3 weeks of use. I can't see any scratches but some of the keys are starting to go shiny.

This E6400 must have been one of the first off the production line in Ireland. When I ordered (on 12th Aug) I was told there was a 2 week lead time on the display. Perhaps that gave the paint plenty of time to dry properly.

Dell just offered me a replacement when I requested a return on the website. I decided last night that it might be better to just request a new cover instead. what do you think I should do? should I just accept a replacement? does anyone know how the replacement system works?

If you are concerned about scratches, I find HP's business notebooks to be the best solution. They are literally scratch-proof, unlike the cheap finishing you get with Dell Latitudes or Thinkpad's rubber finishing.

I've tried all of them and my HP is the only one that has stayed looking as new as when purchased 2 years ago (with the exception of keyboard and touchpad marks).
