They accepted my return for the AU display with "burn in" and bright edge issue. I'm going to purchase an LG screen this time. LP156WF6(SP)(B5), later version of the Dell-provided panel that you mentioned. Estimated delivery is Tuesday.

You'll have to let me know how it is. I think LG LP156WF6 is the way to go with FHD panels, if you can't get Sharp.

I received my replacement LG screen today (much earlier than anticipated) which I promptly installed. It's the same one as it came with, LP156WF6(SP)(B2), and much to my chagrin was significantly better than the screen the device originally shipped with. The screen door effect is basically non-existent on this sample, only showing up if I look really closely. Before I could notice it immediately at a normal distance away. I'm going to take some before/after pictures to help inform the service rep who helped me out for future cases, if anyone experiences this issue.

@NR1 - Turns out the 201 model was indeed SDC4C48, so I can't say I recommend it. It definitely did have PWM, since I did the hand waving test in front of it and saw choppy finger motion, as opposed to pure blur. Again, it might be using it at a higher frequency, but it's definitely still there.

Update to the 1.4.14 BIOS update causing colored snow/black screen graphics issue:
Dell sent a tech to replace motherboard and processor.
This fixed the problem! I can now enable switchable graphics again.

So if anyone else has this issue, with either a 7510, 5510, and maybe 7710, I'd say contact Dell to get a new motherboard. As I mentioned before, the motherboard I got was newer part number than what I originally received.

I tried Linux Mint 17.3 Cinnamon yesterday.
WiFi doesn't work out of the box because Mint 17.3 is based on Ubuntu 14.04 and the 3.19 kernel is old and doesn't have support for newer wifi cards. So I used the ethernet connection and updated the kernel to 4.2.0.35 or something like it. It's the one before the latest. Rebooted and wifi worked.
Touchpad works with two finger scrolling and natural scrolling. Changing the settings to something else doesn't do anything. It doesn't change the trackpad behavior. Not sure what the deal is with that but I didn't care enough to look into it.
nVidia driver 350.63 or something like it (can't remember now) works good and I am able to switch between Intel and nvidia graphics manually. No auto graphic switching. I don't know if it's ever been possible in Linux.
I did not connect to an external monitor so I can't help you with that. Battery life is worse in Linux like it's always been so no surprises there.
That's al I remember right now.

Getting Optimus to work in Linux has always been tricky; you have to use the not-quite-stable bumblebee or primus applications. I don't think they are officially supported by nvidia but they do work with the proprietary driver.

quick question for those 91Whr battery: Are the dimensions the same as the lower spec one or does the battery stick out behind or under the laptop? I understand they are both six cells which means just capacity and not volume like 6 cells vs 9 cells for example. Thanks.

The 9-cell battery does not stick out anywhere or make the laptop any larger.

Hi there! I'm new to the forum and new to the 7510. I received my unit Wednesday, and it's been something of a mixed bag so far.

Right out of the box, the display would go black at random intervals. The backlight would stay on, but nothing other than a hard reboot would bring back the display. This would also occur when attempting to come out of hibernation. I updated the BIOS and the driver for the NVIDIA card, and that problem seems to have cleared up (we'll see), BUT...

I wish I'd read through this thread before ordering, because I'm disappointed in the 4k screen. There's massive fade toward the left and right edges of the screen, and it's really distracting when working with solid colors, including just browsing the internet with a white background on the page -- ugh. It's as if someone applied a gradient filter over the entire display. Has it been determined if this is caused by the matte coating?

From this thread, it doesn't sound like the 1080p panels are very good, especially if you need color accuracy... maybe I can just try to suck up my disappointment in the screen and hope I'll get used to it.

I went with this model because of the supposedly great UHD display, good build quality (oh, but those trackpad buttons. Really, Dell?) the ability to customize during ordering and upgrade the unit down the line, the connectivity options, and the long onsite warranty. For those of you who have used or seen some other recent models, is there a competing 4k solution that you've been particularly impressed (or at least satisfied) with? Should I consider the 5510? How's the glossy UHD screen? I've lived with the downsides of glossy laptop panels for years, and I think I might prefer it to the fade out on the matte panel. And a final silly question -- I've never changed out a laptop panel, so I'm a little clueless, but would it be hypothetically possible to swap a 5510 panel into a 7510?

*The speakers do have vibration issues at higher volumes. It's a really annoying sound, and I see from further back in this thread that I'll be getting out the duct tape to try to pad the trackpad buttons, if I can get past the display and keep the unit.

**I've disabled PC Doctor related tasks in the Task Scheduler. It crashes all the time.

I would contact Dell Support, explain your issue with the screen and they will send you a replacement unit or a replacement part. Its possible that you just got a bad unit with all of the issues that you are having.

I recommend using the Dell chat techsupport, I find it easier than through the phone. Once you go through the motions of troubleshooting, replacement options will be presented to you.
