you are asking for 32GB ECC (direct from Dell, I assume for ideal and best support scenario compared to shopping 3rd party for it)... and asking for overclockable RAM (worst possible support scenario).

Just buy it third party if desiring it. Because to me.... you are asking for 32GB ECC RAM direct from Dell (I assume for ideal support scenario, vs third party)... and you like overclockable RAM (worst possible support scenario from an OEM if it causes probs)

    *edit: sorry, I double posted

@Mano_G. for 5510, is there any difference between the ENERGY STAR qualified and non-qualified model? I heard for some previous Dell workstation that it lowers the performance. Is that true for 5510 as well? Thanks!

Can anyone speak to the differences in quality control/customer support between xps15 and 5510? Currently debating between the two devices.

I have no problem with looking at other third party vendors to upgrade my laptops as that way you usually end up with a much better bang for your buck. But that being said, I always like to see what the original vendor has to offer before going far and wide trying to look for upgrades. That aside, currently I know of no third party company which makes 16 Gigabyte ECC 2133 MHz memory modules at a reasonable price or at any price for that matter.

On top of all that, the original specs to be available for the 5510 as announced by Dell sales team at the Dell World talked about yet another, even more powerful, Intel Xeon CPU which will support the OC memory as well. So to be fair the product, as it is being offered on the dell website configurator now is not all Dell wanted it to be. So I'd rather wait for the full specs to show up in the configurator first, and based on what is made available, and at what price, I shall make up my mind to either buy this baby straight from Dell or to buy a floor model and then upgrade with hardware from other vendors.

Based on the last line of XPS15 and the Precision m3800 earlier this year, the two models are very close to each other in many aspects of design and features, with the XPS being made for the home casual user and the Precision m3800, or in this case the 5510 being made for the professionals.

That is not just a statement for Dell to stick the Pro users with a higher price tag. Careful consideration and minute changes has been made to the Precision line to make it just so as opposed to the XPS. This does not mean that the XPS is not a good ultra-portable laptop, but it definitely is NOT a Precision 5510 no matter how alike they might be in specs and features.

That being said, the real question should be your reason for the purchase and what sorts of work, with what applications, are you going to be doing with the laptop once purchased. Knowing what you want to do with the device can always be a much better guide as to which one to go for.

As for the customer support, the XPS, when bought from the "For Home" section of the site only offers Next Business Day with Premium Phone support and no customizability in the options. But the same XPS can be bought from the "For Work" section of the site with some level of customization using the Dell configurator AND ProSupport with Next Business Day On-Site Service. This is because the businesses also purchase the XPS for their high ranking, not so computer savvy corporate execs, who want to have the latest and coolest gadget all the time.
