Unless your job requires the very bleeding edge in the technology leaps, it is a very good practice to wait out the initial release of any such devices offered by companies no matter what brand they may be. A very good case in point would be the original m3800, which had many inadequacies at the tail end of 2014 before Dell listened to the customer feedback and came out with an updated version in early 2015.

I can confirm the peace of mind with the Pro Support from personal experience. I guess the difference would be that the support technicians know that they are dealing with somebody who has been willing to pay close to 4 grand for a device to do a job that pays the bill, so they should be tech savvy to say the least and look at the purchase as an investment in a tool rather than a thing to browse facebook with.

I love Dell as a company mainly because of the different laptop categorizations based on different workloads and budgets, and also the ability to further customize your final selection to better suit your needs.

Also, once you work with the Xeon series of Intel chipsets, combined with the reliability of the ECC memory, you would never want to go back to consumer grade products like the Core i7 and the none-ECC memory.

And finally, the Intel Xeon E3-1505M v5 is virtually a rebranded Intel Core i7-6920HQ with ECC memory support. This is while Intel announced a while back that they are working on Mobile Intel Xeons for the Skylake architecture which is made from the ground up for mobility.

So, my case is not the case of a hunger for the final specs, but it is more the case of my hunger for an all round device that can be my daily driver for the next few years.

    Hi TakerTX

Thanks for the reply - I like your point of view in this matter. I myself have a 3 year old Lenovo T430S which has served me very well (i7-3520M, 16GB, SSD, mSATA, NVS 5200, HD+, extra battery instead of dvd).
So the jump to this 5510 bad boy would improve my daily work greatly. I know I should wait a bit before ordering, but I'm so tempted. I think I can live with the E3-1505M but if the support for ECC hangs in a thin thread - I might have second thoughts. I dont see ECC for the 7510 either, not matter the Xeon CPU chosen.

How about the E3-1535M - is this a "proper" Xeon?

Also... I hope the early release of the XPS15 has taken the top of the iceberg.

Intel has a very good track record with the Xeon family of processors since the people who use them literally mean business. As such they keep a very high standard for any CPU which is to bear the name especially if it is going to be the first Mobile Xeon. Also, Dell does a very good job with their R&D department before releasing a product to the masses. I am sure they would have ruled out the inclusion of the E3-1505M if it did not outperform the i7 model, even though it might not be entirely designed for that purpose.

The E3-1505M also fully supports the ECC memory, but according to a sales person over at Dell, they are still waiting for their supplies to be in order before they add them to the configurator. So if you want to go for the 5510 you might want to wait a little bit longer for the ECC memory modules to become available and then go for it.

The E3-1535M however, is a proper mobile Xeon, but there is no telling when, if ever, it is going to be offered for the 5510.

The New XPS15 and the Precision 5510 might come out looking very similar as the previous version of the XPS and the m3800 did, but as mentioned earlier here and in other threads, despite their many similarities they each had very different customer feedback and problems of their own.

And finally, judging by your previous machine, I would say that the new Precision 7710 might suit your needs much better. The 5510 is an ultra-portable machine first, and a workhorse second. This means that there will be some performance compromises made to meet the required portability vectors.

    I hope that helps.

I received my 5510 yesterday and i had purchased 2x Mushkin MES4S213FF16G28 for a total of 32GB of ram and the 5510 recognizes it perfectly. I got these on newegg but they are not available as of right now. So Dell for some reason is not selling the 5510 with a 32GB option. On a side note. If you get the hi capacity battery you will not be able to use the 2.5" slot for a drive.

I am using two 40" Samsung JU6500 TV's as monitors as these TVs support 4k@60hz 4:4:4 gamma. However i was able to get the one connected to the Thunderbolt port to 60HZ but the HDMI it would only set it to 30Hz. I am still working on the why.

TakerTX, what exactly is the benefit of ECC memory for the average user? I also thought the Xeon chip had ECC functionality within itself and didn't depend on ECC memory/

Congrats on the purchase, Care to share Which LCD did you go for? Also do you have any pictures to share of the internals of the 5510 with the back panel removed?

I am not a fan of the Mushkin Memory Modules but I hope they end up working better for you than they did for me.
