    Hi
I am thinking of upgrading my Latitude E6420 screen from 1366x768 to 1699x900. I read on the E6420 owner's thread that the one from T420 might work.

I found a LG LP140WD2-TLB1 on Amazon and a matte finish 14" 1600x900 resolution screen for Thinkpad T420 on laptopscreen.com.

Various places seem to have run out of matte finish version of the screens for Latitude E6420.

Has anyone upgraded their screen successfully? Which screen did you use?

The screen shouldn't be the main issue, it's if you need to upgrade to the higher resolution LVDS cable as I know the T420 needs to upgrade the LVDS (doesn't support full channel) to get 1600x900 to work properly. Same thing goes with alot of laptops these days.

I think I saw a few posts mention that as long as the pins on the cable match, the upgrade would work.

My existing LCD has 40 pins as do the LCD I would be upgrading to.

I am still researching but I have not seen a post mention a different cable.
I don't see many LVDS cables listed on outlets selling screens though I found several options for the screen. This particular one comes with 3 yr warranty but doesn't mention any corresponding LVDS cable.

Isn't the 16900x900 LCD only HD+ WXGA++? In order to get FHD don't I need 1920x1080 (WUXGA)? Even 1680x1050 (WSXGA+) seem to be not FHD according the above site. I think even my Thinkpad W520 w/ 1600x900 screen isn't FHD.

Do you have a link to any LVDS cables for T420 or Latitude E6420 that support 1600x900?

Has anyone actually upgraded a Latitude or any other recent laptop, please share your experience.

Anything equal or below 1366 x 768 = single channel LVDS
    Anything above 1366 x 768 = dual channel LVDS

"HD+" and "FHD" LVDS cables are vendor's own "marketing" nomenclature.

In reality there are just two types of LVDS cables: Full featured (Dual-Channel) and Half featured (Single-Channel - 8 leads missing)
It's analogous to DVI and DVI-D

Please note LaptopScreen.com will not mention LVDS cables, since the official position is "Resolution upgrades are not recommended".

So when viewing screen option on LS, keep in mind that hi-res options will work "provided that your original screen was the same resolution"

    PM me with any specifics.

    Cheers

My E6420 doesn't have a webcam or decent display. I can live without a integrated camera (not much of a chatter or conference much)...

That part would definitely be path of least resistance though. I probably would have gone that route if this is my only laptop. :)

    Thanks robin.

    Any of these items suitable?

Those cables are all for different model laptops.

There are some LCD cables for the E6420 available on eBay, but there's no mention of whether it's for 1366x768 or 1600x900 screens. I suppose you could contact Dell Spare Parts and inquire about a cable, but unless you have a part #, it's going to be a tough battle trying to get the reps to locate the part.

You will probably be better off leaving it the way it is, or buying an E6420 with the 1600x900 screen and selling yours...

Thanks. I guess I need dual channel cable since I am going to upgrade to 1600x900 and my current setup has only 1366x768 screen which I would assume is using a single channel cable. I searched for dual channel LCD cable on eBay and found nothing.

    I understand the disclaimer. :)

(Wonder what prevents a higher resolution screen from working in a lower resolution setup other than cable?...Inverter?)

I do not have sufficient privileges yet to PM you...I think. So, I will post here for now.

I am looking at the 1600x900 matte finish on this page:

Dell LATITUDE E6420 replacement Laptop LCD Screen from $55.99 Brand-new screens (never used).

It is currently out of stock. But there was another LG LCD screen (LG LP140WD2-TLB1) which seems to be recommended (at least for T420). Would it not work if the above Latitude specific screen works? Laptopscreen.com has some variant of it when I checked last night.

Do you have any cables to go with these?

What are the model numbers for the Dell Latitude E6420 1600x900 Matte screen and the Thinkpad T420 1600x900 Matte screen?

I see a few ribbon cables (see the other posting) on eBay though not sure if they work.

Thanks LSB...Please let me know if you need any other details.

I would not try panels produced and/or marketed for other makes of notebooks unless you know 100% they are the same size, resolution, and most important, firmware version as the one made for your specfic system. The E6420 screen/cable info is below. The part numbers to the left are the important characters to focus on followed by the model number.

Also, do not think a higher model number means newer/better. Most of the time, it is the same core panel, but made for a different OEM who wants their own model name and firmware version.

Of the panels below, I like the AUO the best, followed by the Samsung, and then the LG. Likewise, it is hard to find the AUO and Samsung while the LG is the most common and easy to get.

For the cable, you just need to call or chat Dell and keep asking them to find you one. If that doesn't work, I have an extra new one here, but I would rather not sell it; at least for any amount under $40.
