Yes, others have tried earlier in this thread and it does not work for just the reason you mentioned. It must be PCIE SSD and there is no market available 2242 format PCIE SSD.

Thanks, any explanation why the WWAN slot on the previous version E7x40 will except the mSATA SSD, and the new E7x50 WWAN would not?
Another video that this guy just used a mSATA SSD and put it on the WWAN slot on his E7240 and it works!

Because on the E7x40 the WWAN slot is a MPCIE slot while on the E7x50 the WWAN slot is a M.2 slot. Two different standards. Nobody makes a M.2 PCIE SSD that fits in the 42mm slot yet. Most are 80mm or longer.

Both the WLAN and WWAN slots on the E7x50 series are M.2. No more MPCIE except on the E7250 where the SSD is in a MPCIE slot.

    thanks, that explains it.
More question if you don't mind as I'm still curious

so the E7x40 has MPCIE and can accept mSATA, so SATA works fine with PCIE
but the E7x50 has M.2 PCIE and doesn't accept M.2 SATA. so SATA doesn't work with PCIE in this case, sounds like a hit or miss to me?

Another confusion thing is I talked with 2 different dell support reps yesterday and today and both of them say that I can use a mSATA on the WWAN slot for my E7250, which appears to be a wrong information according to this?
    I'm still confused...

Don't trust the dell reps. They don't know what they're talking about the majority of the time.

Dell's own documentation (see WWAN section here) shows an "SSD cache" label on the slot but does not mention the SSD type. However, the close-up photo of the slot here shows no mention of SSD.

It's likely that Dell support staff refer to their documentation, see "SSD" and assume that it is mSATA as on the previous model. Why change to M.2 considering that it results in a less versatile notebook? It's possible that the designers were being pushed in that direction by the 4G card manufacturers and also assumed that suitable M.2 SSDs would be available.

To make it more confusing, the mSATA IS used (as the only drive) in e7450 with discrete graphics. There is no 2.5" slot. But yes I believe as of now there is no way to run 2 drives in a e7450 while there is in e7440. (I have kept holding on to my e7440 for this reason)
