I was browsing around the Dell Premier site today, went back to the E7450 page, and noticed that there is an option now (I don't recall seeing it when I ordered my E7450) for "Build Your Own." It allows for full customization of the E7450, so it's possible to get the i7-5600U, NVIDIA 840m, 16GB RAM, 512GB mSATA SSD, FHD Touch display, etc. I sent an email to my sales rep requesting to return mine and order one with the 840m.

Just called our representative, and touch with discrete gpu is not yet available in central Europe. @Svnyster Please let us know how it looks like in your country (US?) if it's possible, or if its just a glitch on website.

Hello everybody, so I just found this thread after receiving my E7450 and wondering how to add a second drive. Mine came with an 256 GB mSATA drive attached to a 2.5" SATA bracket adapter, so naturally i was planning on moving this mSATA drive to the WWAN port (like i did with my E7440) and use the 2.5" drive spot with a proper 2.5" 1TB SSD. Many hours of reading later, i find that the WWAN port in the E7450 is of a different type (42mm M.2), leaving us with M.2 PCIe and SATA based SSD.

Here are a picture of my system, you can see the mSATA drive in its bracket adapter, and and empty WWAN HCA slot:

Close up of the WWAN HCA port, where a boot SSD would be nice to have.

As previously pointed, there are two versions with discrete and UMA graphics, from an email with a rep:

Now, from this we can see that the E7450 discrete version does away with the 2.5" bay instead using a mSATA as storage (similar to the E7250), but seems to keep the M.2 port.

    My questions:

    1) Do we have a confirmed M.2 SATA SSD that works with our board?
    2) Are there any PCIe based SSD in this size? (or expected in 2015)

    Ive ordered both this SSDs:
Transcend 256 GB SATA III 6Gb/s MTS400 42 mm M.2 SSD Solid State Drive TS256GMTS400

Kingspec CHA M2b7 128g Solid State Disk MLC Flash Hard Drive
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00K6R71S6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'm HOPING one of them will work as my boot drive in that M.2 slot, and i can keep my 1TB 2.5" ssd.

    cheers!

I don't want to let you down, but svnyster already tried msata (actually both drives you ordered are msata). Maybe theres some hidden thingy in bios, but I would say, that SATA controller is not connected. So only way is to buy pcie disk - currently no manufacturer is planning short version (2242).

Btw. thank you for photos! It looks like discrete graphics has bigger fan. Hopefully translates to more silent run if GPU is idle.

It would be a real bummer if i cannot get one of those drives to work, maybe it requires UEFI during set up? (and drivers during OS install?), I was under the impression the M.2 or NGFF port is really just a PCIe bus supporting 1x, 2x or 4x, and it was the controller on the M.2 chip that translated it to SATA. Gotta love this 'standard'

I do see 4 SATA boxes in Bios interface however:
    SATA-0 = 2.5" SATA drive in laptop
    SATA-1 = e-port plus dock e-sata/usb port
    SATA-2 = ???
    SATA-3 = ???

What / where are the third and fourth SATAs? Could this be a hint of M.2 SATA support ?

Boot Sequence showing UEFI, it lets you add a boot option (might be a way to get it to boot from the M2. SSD?)

anybody know when this thing will become available in the US?

Hello Svnyster, are you able to see the 840m option in the US? if i can get the discrete graphics, im returning this one. (tons of backlight bleeding anyway)

If that M.2 SSD was available, then there's a chance that it would work. I also see the 4 different SATA options in BIOS, but I haven't been able to find an explanation of what each of them are. I tried M.2 SATA SSDs in the WWAN slot, and they did not work since it's PCIe. I have also tried every setting I thought could potentially allow the M.2 SATA SSD, but no luck.

As for the 840m option, I have only been able to see the option through the Dell Premier site, so you would need to have a Dell Premier (business) account to order it. For anyone that has a Premier account and is looking for the option, you need to select the "Build Your Own" option. It's preconfigured with options like an i5 processor, 80GB mSATA SSD, 4GB RAM, etc., but you have full customization options available.

@Svnyster - are you in US? I unfortunately don't have those credentials - IT guys do. But I called directly our representative (EU) and they don't see it in their configuration tool.

I am in the US. When I spoke with my Dell rep initially, he didn't see the 840m as an option either. I'm actually still waiting to hear back from him (sent him an email Sunday evening), and I'll be calling him tomorrow when I have a bit more time.
