Is the 6440 still a good buy or should one wait to see what dells doing with skylake?

Skylake is an incremental improvement on Broadwell which, in turn, is an incremental improvment on Haswell. Perhaps what matters is whether the Skylake Latitudes are an incremental change to the existing range or a major chassis redesign. However, I've seen no clues about what Dell has in mind for the Latitudes although some info has been released on the Precision workstations.

What features are you looking for and how much do you value raw processing performance, robustness, portability and battery life?

If you are wanting a discrete GPU then the Nvidia GPU in the dGPU version of E7450 offers better performance than the AMD 8690M of the E6440. Or do you need a built-in optical drive rather than keep a USB burner in the drawer for those occasions when you need it.

Unless you don't mind the size / weight of the E6440 and can find it at a very attractive price then I would point you towards the E7450 (there's usually a good selection in Dell Outlet) with the FHD display. Something with an SSD will feel faster in everyday usage than another machine with a faster CPU but a hard disk.

I realize this thread is not very active at all but here we go. I would like to know if the optical drive bay connection is a Sata 2 or 3 on the 6440. I want to know because I am thinking of getting one to run it in RAID0 with two SSDs.
    Thanks

Do any recent notebooks have SATA 2 connections anymore?

I have an E6440 which has an after market 2nd SSD in a caddy for the optical bay and appears to be sata 3 based of benchmarks. I see 494MB/s read and 289MB/s Write for a 256GB Crucial M50
I do not run raid they are simply just a pair of SSD's. One primary OS and SQL. The seconds SSD is for VM's and storage.

Also yes, you can still purchase devices with sata 2. Some of the consumer 2-in-1's such as the Insprion 11 3147 Pentium Quad core is sata 2.

    Hi Guys,

    I could use some help.

I have a E6440 (that I love) which recently broke (motherboard failure). I bought a replacement motherboard from eBay and I installed it on Sunday.

I noticed that the JCAM1 port is missing from the motherboard. There are 2 connectors for the LCD panel and one of them goes in the JCAM1 port. I assumed this is for the Webcam and that the LCD would still function. But it turns out that the LCD does not turn on. No backlight, nothing. The laptop runs and I can see video if I hook up a VGA monitor to it.

Is it safe to assume that the missing plug from the motherboard is the reason why the LCD is not turning on? Or is it because my LCD is also fried? :(

    Hi,
Is it possible to put half msata SSD below full size mini pcie wwan module instead of putting half mini pcie wwan below the full size msata ssd?
The owner's manual shows illustration that the full size mini pcie wwan module is put on the top slot.
    Thanks.

Just a few questions on my new E6440:

    1) I am getting a 1080p version. I assume this means eDP internally, right? Does this mean that if I can find a 1440p or even 2160p panel in the future that fits, that its just a matter of hooking it up?

    2) Any chance that the E7440/E7450 keyboard can be used in place of the E6440 keyboard?

    3) Do these come with Win10 licenses natively in the firmware (ie: SLIC 3.0), or will I need to install Win7 and do a free 'upgrade'?

    4) Internal fax/modem upgradeability was dropped, right?

    5) Anyone ever run a 4K display externally off of a docking station with one of these?

    6) If the warranty is still valid per the Dell Support tag lookup, but I bought it from a refurbishing company, will Dell talk to me?

    7) Any reasonable chance of fitting a 2nd set of WiFi antennae? I need the WWAN antennas for a WWAN 4G LTE card, so re-purposing them isn't an option.

    8) Can vPro features like AMT be used without buying the fancy Dell management software?

    9) Mine comes with 4gb RAM, presumably 1 DIMM. Thinking of just adding a single 8gb DDR3L SODIMM to bring it to 12gb, which will make it technically not fully dual channel. And saving my $$$ to eventually buy a 16gb DDR3L SODIMM if they ever come down in price. How bad is this performance-wise?
