The 6-series Dells appear to be dead-end products. The problem with the Ultrabook-based 7-series is that their chips have to be heavily derated in order to meet the thermal envelope of an Ultrabook.

If one goes with the highest-spec i7 in an e6440, you probably still have a machine which can smoke the highest-spec E7470 w/derated i7 Ultrabook.

I wouldn't pay (and didn't) factory Dell prices, but for $300, it was pretty much a no-brainer to jump on a 1080p equipped E6440 instead of paying at least twice that for a 1080p E7450. I have a 4G LTE card I'll be transferring over from the D830 which would have needed replacement with a M.2 version in an 7-series.

The D830 in my tagline was about $1500 brand-new, so its rather astonishing how much cheaper/better things are these days.

I think it will depend on the person who answers the phone call. I had heard that in order for warranty to be valid, the original owner has to notify Dell and give the name and address of the new owner.
I bought a used E5440 on ebay two weeks ago as "not working/for parts only". It turned out that the battery would not charge. I called Dell and they arranged for a tech to come and replace the motherboard. They never asked me for proof of purchase. Only for the service tag # which obviously showed that it was still within warranty. I was impressed with their quick and efficient service.
    You experience may vary.

These are 2014 models and W10 wasn't around when these were released. They came with W7 Pro. You can do a clean install of W10 without ugrading from W7. You can eneter your existing W7 key and it will activate W10 with no problem. Microsoft made this possible a few months back.

16GB DDR3L is cheap these days.

How about get two 2.5" SSDs and setup a RAID 0 for double the fun? I did and I like the results :D

Ye that's brilliant do you notice the speed change though? From 500mbs ish to 1000?

I'm planning on recording many channels of audio...recording my band on my E6440 so as you can tell those speeds would be welcomed!
    Are you using an msata?

No I don't notice the speed change going from 1 SSD to 2 SSDs. I do have a small mSata drive in there that I use to play around with Linux, but I am using two 2.5" SSDs. One in the stock 2.5" bay, and one in place of the optical drive. I bought 2nd hard drive caddy that replaces the optical drive.

Dell e6440 is still pretty pricey on Dell Outlet but some good deals on Ebay.

its probably last of the great laptops with easy access harddrives, ram chips and battery.

Yes, ebay all the way for me. I have had many Latitudes over years and all were bought on ebay.

    Hi Guys,

Does the e6440 have better build quality and lighter weight than the e5440?

Also, with the 92 whr batter and bay battery, what kind of battery life can the e6440 get and overall weight?

    thanks guys!
