I have an E6230 w/ i5-3320m (little weaker than you're looking it in the i7-3520M), and an E6430 w/ i7-3720QM. They have comparable aftermarket SSDs in them (Intel 520 in the 6430, OCZ Vertex 3 in the E6230). For most things, the two perform identically. For things that require the Nvidia GPU in the E6430, or things that take advantage of the quad core (video encoding, some of my app development at work) the E6430 is much faster. The big down side is much worse battery life (although better than my earlier E6420 with i7-2720qm.)

I don't see the value in jumping from the i5 to the dual-core i7. If you have uses now which will use the quad core, go with it. It might be worth it to get the quad core anyway, for future-proofing especially if you play games (a surprising number of games out now will use more than 2 cores if more are available... it was a big deal a few years ago with GTA 4 when it ran better on quads, but it's pretty mainstream now)... but if not, I'd look at the i5-3320 instead of the i7 dual cores.

ATG is semi-ruggedized and has optional external antennas and carry handle. For general office use, it's just a way to pay more and look silly, like folks who commute in an SUV. For in-the-field use, some people really need it.

Acording to the Dell Specs found here Help Me Choose: LCDs | Dell (click on "Compare side-by-side"), the E6430 HD+ (1600x900) display should have 300 nits, 300:1 contrast and 45% colour gamut.

I agree with mr_handy. Unless you have a need for the quad core CPU, go for battery life. I have a E6430 with the i7-3720QM and I need the 9 cell + media bay battery to get to 8-9 hours. My wife had an E6320 with only the 9 cell and gets 10 hours or so.

Next time I will get a lower power processor. I'll live if Outlook takes another quarter second to launch. ;)

    Hi,
does somebody use a E6430 (best would be one without nvidia) with linux and can tell me about the fan behaviour?
In my >5y old D830 it is off most of the time, but i read in the E6430 it would run all the time.

    Thanks in advance!

Just bought an e6430 but i didn't notice an option for a 4 cell battery on dell. Not just in the build, but in their battery section for purchase. Do they not sell one does anyone know? The only place i even see if referenced is on their site when describing their starting weight of 4.44lbs for the computer. I'm trying to keep my computer as light as possible so i'd love to have a 4 cell. What up?

Although if i take my 6 cell out and store it, will that somehow negatively affect it's overall, dunno what the word is, capacity? strength?

Also, where can i get an "airbay", or plastic placeholder/front for the dvd drive for this computer? I googled around and didn't see one.

Hi guys, I'm wondering if the E6430 would be a good fit for me. I currently own two E6420's, one as a primary and then a secondary/spare machine. I am considering replacing one of them (if not eventually both) with an E6430.

The reason is, my two E6420's seem to always run hotter than my old E6410. The fan comes on quite often. One of my E6420's has an i7 and Nvidia, the other an i5 and integrated graphics, both dual core. Oddly enough, the one with an i5 and integrated graphics seems to run HOTTER than the i7 with NVidia. That doesn't make sense to me. On both, the fans are on quite often. Just opening a web browser is enough to kick the fan on and have it on for a while.

Does the E6430 have the same issue? In particular, is the fan on quite often?

On both of my E6420's, I applied Artic Silver 5 which helped, but did not eliminate the problem.

If the E6430 runs hot too, I'll probably just stick with what I have.

Another question I have, do the lower end processors typically run cooler? Meaning, if I spec out a E6430 with an i5 instead of an i7, would that equal a cooler running machine? I used to think that, but the fact that my i5 E6420 runs hotter than my i7 really has me wondering...

If you want a cool/slient running machine maybe the upcoming E6430u could be interesting for you. The standard E6x30 are not really optimized in this regard.
