Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the E6430u limited to a resolution of 1366x768?

Just bought a Dell Refurbished E6430 for near 1/3 the online price...v.happy. Already added an extra 4GB RAM and a 128GB SSD, waiting on the DVD bay caddy to arrive to transplant my regular HDD to.

Now to sell off my aging D830 & D430.

I've had a search about, Dell site included, but cannot seem to find the card types supported in the SD slot, and the max capacities... any ideas?

As far as I know there is no 4-cell battery for the E6420/E6430/E6520/E6530 -- I vaguely recall there being a 3-cell option when I ordered my E6420 in early 2011, but it was not available this year on the E6430, and does not seem to be available as an extra part -- and I may be confusing it with the in-the-bay battery (which is a 3-cell expansion)

It sounds like you already have the laptop, but otherwise I'd have recommended looking at the smaller E6430s, which is much lighter and has a 3-cell option (but no quad-core option.)

There is not, so far as I know, any form-fitting airbay option for the E6x20/E6x30s -- although a leftover 9.5mm Lenovo one will fit, although it will leave a bit of an unattractive overhang and an open spot where the Dell ejection handle would be. Unfortunately, you cannot use an E6x10/E6x00 bay device because the ejection handle is deeper on those.

Lithium-ion batteries degrade over time, and with charge cycles; they'll degrade faster if either fully charged or fully discharged when stored -- the best way to store one is with a moderate but not full charge (say, 25-75% of full charge.)

    --

re Linux fan behavior, the fan stays off on mine on Linux when idle, but tends to come on pretty quickly -- seems to be more quickly than under Windows.

I'm also interested in this, if anyone has any recommendations for places to get the upgraded (1600x900 resolution) screen.

I checked ScreenTekInc.com (Dell Latitude LCD Screens), but all they listed is the lower (1366x768) resolution screen.

    Thanks for any ideas.

Finally pulled the trigger on one of from the outlet. With the cyber monday 25% off - I feel like I got a pretty good deal.

    A couple of questions:

    1. Is anyone using a dell E-Port replicator as a docking station? If so, does the port provide direct access to the Nvidia GPU to run the monitors? Other then the inclusion
of USB 3.0 - is there any other advantage to going with the newest model? The previous USB 2.0 version is dirt cheap on ebay.

    2. I feel silly asking this one. I thought my laptop was coming with blue tooth. However, now that I have it it - I can find no bluetooth controller in the control panel anywhere. Windows seems to think is should be in the "connect devices" section. Here are the the lines from my order that are likely pertinent: there is no individual line item stating "blue tooth module" - which means it is not there, right? I think its a little deceptive the way they list that.... unless it's supossed to be here and isn't... or I just cant find where to turn it on. (I am changing to 7 after many years on XP) Which would make me feel really silly!

I think it's a nice machine. I am still getting over the fact that it is actually BIGGER then my 5 year old Vostro 1400. It bugs me - but I will get over it. But, like others have said, it really does feel like a 14" laptop in a 15" chasis.

None the less - it's nice - and I expect it will serve me well.

Need to upgrade the RAM first. Then maybe early next year get a 512GB SSD. Though I worry about all the people who speak of SSD failing and corrupting data. Early research seems to indicate that expensive is the way to go... ie Samsung.

The DVI/display ports (or port, with the single-DVI version) are directly connected to the Nvidia card, as with the external HDMI port.

The VGA port is connected to the Intel card.

Mine came without Bluetooth, and I had to add the module. It's kind of a pain to reach the connector, but not horrible.

Odd that it would come with the BT cable but not the module?

That was my complaint about the E6420, and I've mostly gotten used to it.

Samsung 830s are pretty reliable, Intel 520 is pretty good as well (although is at 480gb rather than 512gb). By the time you get to it, the next generation drives that are just coming out (especially Samsung 840 Pro) may have enough track record to be worth recommending.

Thanks Mr. H for the reply.

    1. So, I still wonder... does the Dock Socket provide video connection to the Nvidia Card...or bypass it? I may have to ask dell on this one.

    2. Yes - I too think it's odd that I dont have a BT module. I guess I could call my rep and see if it was supposed to be there. The little logitech dongle taking up a usb port and hanging out the side is a little underwhelming.

    Thanks!

What dock socket? If you mean the overall docking port connector, it does -- on the digital but not analog connections. Analog and internal LVDS are Intel only, external digital both on the dock (DVI/display port) and the built-in HDMI port are all Nvidia.
