Finally(after almost a month wait) received a replacement laptop today. Unbelievable, but it has the same issue with the black screen. I'll call Dell on Monday.
I think that the problem is related to the QHD+ display power management.

Does anybody on this forum have M4800 with QHD+ display that does not suffer from the "black screen" problem ? Please try to go into BIOS and close/open the lid. Does your screen turn back on?

I had few black out problem but it came back working fine, so I don't know what's the exact cause and it should still be there. For a $2000, ask for new replacement.

I have the same issue from the original post. I ordered my 4800 online and got it on 2/19. I leave it plugged into an external monitor most of the day so I never really noticed it until I moved to another room and there it was.. Black screen!

After seeing this thread, I called Dell and we walked through the normal driver procedures. They are wanting to replace my screen but I do not think it will work so I am holding off on that. I too have verified it to be an nvidia issue. I have not tried to go back too far with NVIDIA since the latest I can find online is Jan-2013. Ugh.

I had a spare hard drive which I swapped out and loaded a store bought version of windows 7 64bit on it. It works as it is supposed to before loading the NVIDIA drivers on it. So this narrows it down even more to the drivers and not with how Dell built the O/S.

Are there other graphics card options I could have picked that Dell can switch me to? I love the laptop otherwise. I use this laptop for work so I do not need a high end 3d card.

On a side note, if I get the black screen and I use Function F1 to put it to sleep, it appears to wake and I can see the screen, but that is quickly followed by a BSOD and a reboot. Grrr.

    Sharing in your frustrations,

    Chris

I doubt that replacement laptop will not have this issue.
I spoke with Dell Pro support last week and the guy said that there is an issue with QHD+ and NVidia.
He also said that Dell had forwarded this issue to NVidia for further investigation.

I believe if you can downgrade from QHD to FHD and take Fire-pro option problem may disappear. What bothers me that machine didn't have "QC and test run" before it was signed of to be shipped to customers, making us self proclaimed DELL hardware issue experts? not very nice if you ask me.
Too bad it seems unlikely that if you swap Nvidia for Firepro card it will pull the QHD screen, could have been an easy enough solution otherwise.

update they are sending me a non QHD version of the same laptop. anyone know why the downgrade? an overlook perhaps? ;) don't think so, but I will ask.

That sounds like what I might end up doing. I sent my Dell guy an email asking if I could downgrade to the FHD. As long as it has the anti-glare I am happy. Plus, I've heard the FHD will prolong battery life. It sucks that we have to do this. If I pay this much for a higher end machine I would expect it to work. But I am glad that their support is being reasonable, it could always be worse.
