So the consensus on ChiMei vs. AUO -- I have the AUO coming out today..... should I give it a go? I certainly don't want a downgrade

I do have the dedicated graphics. And my graphics score is 3.2, which did not go up when I used some 160.xx laptopvideo2go drivers.

    I have 2.2ghz, 2gb ram, NVS 135M, 120gb 7200rpm. This driver mess is retarded.

Yeah hopefully drivers get fixed up soon am getting 3.2 rating for gfx from vista. When my new memory sticks come am i'll try a fresh install of vista and laptopvideo2go drivers and see if there is a difference in score.

Also i have the CMO screen and the text looks sharp for me and the display is bright.

i noticed the same washed out, relatively 'dry' look of the CMO monitor before i calibrated it using this software -

    http://www.hex2bit.com/products/product_mcw.asp

now i'm more than happy with the contrast/colors, although it still doesn't match the saturation of my Samsung 20" desktop LCD. then again, that's a true 16-bit panel.

Thanks for that software -- I'll check it out later.

Did you do any adjustments to the default menu text or anything else in Vista?

as long as you're running your LCD in its native resolution (1440x900 for the WXGA+ and 1280x800 for WXGA), the text should be very crisp and clear, even if you're running cleartype. personally i have very little complaints with this monitor. the viewing angles seem much superior to the 640m i used at work, and it's bright enough for a non-LED lappy screen.
