Ok I just ordered a D630. :) I'm psyched and can't wait until it comes! What are some things that I should do when it gets to me? Should I do a clean install of Vista?

Yes. Do a clean install of Vista, get rid of the bloatware.

load97--Actually the D630's come virtually bloatware free. I was pleasantly surprised when mine arrived. The only thing I uninstalled from mine was the Google toolbar. There wasn't any of the trialware crap that I'd come to expect from past computer purchases.

I personally don't see the need for a clean install.

    I agree with Dordale.

    It is almost bloatware free.

I uninstalled Google Toolbar, Google Desktop, and cleaned out the services.msc, and deselect some Start Up programs through msconfig.

Then I did a Defrag, and that was all. I have NOT HAD ANY CRASHES from this system. This is a first for me for awhile...

    Best,
    Ilham

i agree, no need to reinstall... the laptop is almost "boring" in how little there is pre installed on it but for me that's a major plus

make sure you have the latest Nvidia drivers, available on dell support as they dramatically improve the vista base score which you can find in system maintenance...

I also installed I8kfangui which controls fan usage better than the bios. I just set it to normal and the machine is almost totally silent, apart from when I really load the usage...

On the start bar, disable the "show new installed progs" or it may be called "highlight recently used progs" in the properties section as this slows down the menu tree on the start bar...

I addded zone alarm plus AVG free antivirus

I also updated the wireless drivers from dell support

some people talk about calibrating the screen but I don't think this is necessary...

hmmmmmmmm, beyond that I think that's all I did.

On the whole, a really good system... In the Uk, we have a fence paint and varnish brand called Ronseal and their advertising says "Ronseal, it does what it says on the box" and these 630s are real Ronseal products!! No bells and whistles but quick, well built, smooth machines... if you want the gizmos, you should have gone for a poorly built consumer machine... you made the right choice!!

Just got it in the mail...WOW. It looks even better in person, it's fast and, so far , stable. I'm happy with my decision, for now :)

Trust me, it gets even better the more you actually use it. :)
It's so trouble-free it feels almost boring - but in a very good way. ;)

Ditto what Zillator says. I've had my D630 since July, and I'm still really impressed with it. It's a great machine!

I am with the other guys on this one, it's a great system...

I have a question regarding Vista. My laptop is so slow to boot up. I get this really long black screen and I am sure the slowness is related to Vista. My laptop is still new, I have not installed any bloated stuff on it.

If anyone has any advice, I would be hugely grateful...

    Many thanks

    nick
