I have the dvd + cd-rw drive (doesn't write dvds) but it does the same thing you're explaining ... makes a lot of clicking noises when loading and accessing disks. I'm assuming it's ok because it still works fine.

And I'm almost positive it's not the HD because I replaced that with one of my own.

I'm not sure how you define loud but mine sounds just like the drive in my Inspiron 8200. It's not quiet and it's not quite like a desktop drive either.

It should be the only entry that you can safely remove assuming you have no other removable drives installed.

    Hey folks,

I just got my D630 earlier this week. As I was going through some of its specs, I was wondering if I was reading my video card correctly. I apologize if this sounds like a newbie question but I just wanted to make sure.

I ran dxdiag (I'm running WinXP Pro SP2) and under the Display tab, it lists the name, manufacturer, chip type and approx. total memory (as well as other things). Under approx. total memory, it states "256.0 MB"! Is this an integrated 256 MB? This is not with TurboCache, right?

I suspect it is 256 MB because Dell bungled up the order of this laptop (plus 6 other D630s -- my advisor was purchasing a bunch of hardware for people under a grant) and mentioned "upgraded video cards" in an email when we were inquiring about the late order (over a month late) but it didn't process in my head until just now.

Thus, I want to make sure I'm reading it right and not dreaming or interpreting the information incorrectly. Thanks.

hope this isnt too much of a downer, but the dedicated card that is available for the d630 is a quadro 135, and with 128mb onboard
this means you have the integrated x3100, which i believe supports up to 384mb of shared memory

    MrApples,

Sorry I wasn't clear about it before but I'm pretty sure it's an Nvidia Quadro, not an X3100 - especially since we had ordered it with the Quadro. At the time we were ordering and my advisor was making the choice selection through our school (I was sitting with her at the time), I noticed our school selection 'forced' her to choose the Nvidia Quadro since there was no other choice for the X3100.

So.... unless I'm completely mistaken, this is what it reads on the "Display 1" tab:

    Name: NVIDIA Quadro NVS 135M
    Manufacturer: NVIDIA
    Chip Type: Quadro NVS 135M
    DAC Type: Integrated RAMDAC
    Approx. Total Memory: 256.0 MB
    Current Display Mode: 1280 * 800 (32 bit) (60Hz)
    Monitor: Default Monitor

Believe me, if this is all a lie and a dream, I would be very depressed...

I think the nvs 135m has 128mb onboard and shares another 128mb. Though I'm not remotely sure about it, but I remember hearing it somewhere.

My Quadro NVS says 256 MB as well, but it might just be the Turbocache getting counted. I did try using RivaTuner to turn off Turbocache and it's still saying 256 MB. Not sure if it's RivaTuner that's busted or if it actually has 256 MB. My invoice still says 128 MB.

Hi, I just bought myself a D830 with the following specs:

    - T7500 2.20GHZ 4M CORE 2 DUO
    - 4GB RAM
    - 160GB SATA HD,9.5MM,7200RPM
    - 256MB NVIDIA QUADRO NVS 140M
    - 15.4IN WIDE WSXGA+ LCD (IMHO more pixels is way too much for a 15.4" screen, and I still have the external one)

I've been reading a lot about it and there's a lot of info about the problems with Vista, but I ordered it with XP Proffesional since I won't change until it's more massive and all the compatibility problems have been fixed.
That's why I wanted to ask you guys if anyone has tried it with XP and if you have been experiencing any problems with it, any info will be gladly received.

    Thanks...
