It seems I am the only one with this problem. I am using a Vostro 1400. Whenever I try to install XP using the CD I created (with nLite, which includes the ICH8 Driver, and every driver highlighted as instucted), Vista blocks the program from running. It says Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on my computer is newer than the version on the CD. Also, I've gotten a blue screen every time after trying to boot from CD. Am I doing something wrong?

    Any help is appreciated.

You don't run the XP installer from within Vista. You need to actually boot off the XP cd.
What shows up on the screen? The XP installer should start off in text mode with a blue background. At what stage does it stuff up?

It freezes right after everything has loaded, when it says "Setup is starting Windows"

After which I get the typical blue screen. The technical information at the bottom reads...

    *** STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xF76130BF, 0xF7A5F208, 0xF7A5EF08)

I've encountered the same problem too, and this is using the XP CD to boot up.

I followed the steps in the original post, and got XP running on the 1400 (thank you), and it has been working perfectly for months.

Just recently Dell released the A03 bios, and these are allegedly supposed to make the Vostro 1400 compatible with XP. So... from what I understand, the bios should allow you to install XP from a retail disc without slipstreaming drivers, right?

The reason I am asking, is because I am looking to format (just to start off fresh, the laptop got cluttered). If nobody has an answer to this, i'll probably test it out myself.

    Hi there Johnney!

I have tried to find the changelog for the new BIOS but didn't have any success, did you find anything related?! Is that true that the new BIOS supports Windows XP Installation!?

If anybody knows anything related to that please leave a line here... :)

I'm tired of Windows Vista... crappy system. :(

I get the same issue as goobre:

It freezes right after everything has loaded, when it says "Setup is starting Windows"

After which I get the typical blue screen. The technical information at the bottom reads...

    *** STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xF76130BF, 0xF7A5F208, 0xF7A5EF08)

I've tried updating the BIOS to A03. I've tried changing AHCI to ATA. I'm using a slipstreamed XP install with all the necessary drivers. If anyone has had similar issues and found a workaround, please post it.
