alright, get the R159805.exe drivers and install them and then install the R127314 drivers. That has me up and running....finally.

did you turn off the bluetooth radio through vista before downgrading to xp? if so, you might need to download the "patch" they have at dell regarding the xp bluetooth issue on vostro notebooks.

Another happy XP user here. "Conversion" went pretty smooth, except for video driver (I have built in x3100) which took me half hour to find, but then again - only due to my own stupidity. Other than that -
    1. I started out by following Dell Media Direct guide and booting with MD CD
    2. Proceeded (as instructed in MD guide) with XP installation -
    I went by the http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=150033
    with few exceptions:
    - when slipstreaming SATA drivers, I picked them all as opposed to just one
    - used DELL wifi link from this thread (the other one has Intel)
    - had to hunt down x3100 graphics media driver on Intel site (in support/downlads searched for: x3100 driver)
    3. Once XP was up and running I popped Dell Media Direct CD again and completed installation following the guide (enclosed booklet that came with the CD)

Everything seems to be working now, I have no unidentified devices and Media Direct is working as well.

I was actually pretty happy with Vista - it performed acceptable to my needs. Unfortunately, some of the applications I use at work aren't compatible with Vista yet... so I was more/less forced back to XP... ALthough I have to admit - XP is noticeably faster. But then again, Vista was okay too.

Griff_ga: Do I first want to delete all of the existing partitions on the hard drive before using the MediaDirect disk? Maybe that's a really stupid question, but I want to make sure I do this correctly.

    Thanks!

Also, do I need QuickSet properly installed for MediaDirect to work?

is it possible if you guys share your xp "slipstreamed" installers thru torrent/rapidshare maybe?

i'm posting this on behalf of my newbie cousin..

@vadimom - you have almost if not all the same setup

    14.1" wxga (1280x800)
    T5470 1.6GHz 800MHz
    512MB 667MHz DDR2
    80GB SATA
    8x DVD+/-RW
    Intel Integrated GMA X3100
Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g 54Mbps Wireless Mini Card
    Integrated Stereo Sound
    6 cell 56Whr Batt
    Integrated 10/100 Fast Ethernet
    Internal 56K modem
bought with NO Windows OS, DOS cd provided
bought from MDi Philippines, Local Distributor for Dell

i'm having a hard time helping him with the xp installation because of geographical reasons..i'm in cebu city(PH) and he's in manila(PH). if i can give/send/direct him to a download link for a "slipstreamed" xp installer with support for AHCI SATA it may solve my problem..

first solution i told him was to change the bios setting for the SATA drive from the default AHCI to ATA. after changing the bios setting he was able to proceed with the xp installation. but, we're still having problems with the drivers since the cd that come with the vostro only supports vista.

now, i'm giving him instructions to download drivers from the Intel site instead of Dell.. which i'm sure we'll take him a long time.

    please help. TIA.

    hey, yayix

The intel matrix storage drivers can be installed after the windows install too, and you can set the SATA drive back to AHCI after that.

    thanks for the quick reply.

i'm aware of the matrix storage driver but i did not recommend this to my cousin since i'm not sure if there'll be problems after installation or after changing the bios setting again to AHCI.

are there other settings we have to change in xp before changing the bios?

does this mean that the steps we'll be doing is the same with using the "slipstreamed" xp installer?

    1] change bios to ATA
    2] install xp
    3] install chipset driver
    4] install video driver
5] install intel matrix storage driver
    6] change bios to AHCI
