    A "netbook" it is not!

The reason I bought this vostro is because I want a real portable computer that I can work on, not a toy. I had a much praised netbook, but soon found out how limited it was, I couldn't really do any work on it.

And what a difference the Vostro 1220 makes, it is small but powerful, in fact, it is the fastest computer in my household now. I really enjoy the speediness of the machine and it handles even 1080p playback without breaking a sweat when I need some entertainment. I love it - except for the pathetic mono sound.

Yes I was about to pull a trigger on one of those CULV notebooks until I saw how powerful the Vostro series is and guess what, it's even lighter than those CULV notebooks!

Am definitely prepared for the bad speakers..I realised I never used the speakers of my current laptop anyway....earphones ftw! :p

After lugging around my Precision m4400 for 9 months, I'll be able to put that Vostro 1220 in my back pocket :p

I did dell outlet, have 250gb hd, but this will have only have small Vista Basic partition (to facilitate Bios updates, etc.), and the rest Ubuntu 9.10 x64which will boot default....that's a lot of space for linux. 2 days and counting. If I'm not lazy I'll post some pics of the 'refurb' :)

Anyone can share the actual weight of the system with the 6cell batt and the optical drive? Thanks!

I wish I had a scale so I can weigh it for you.

If you wear earphones, you'll hear whatever you're listening to in stereo, right?

Yes, the system has stereo sound capability with external speakers and headphones, but for some strange reason, Dell decided to put just one speaker in the computer, which is stupid:

It can't be about the cost, because even $300 netbooks have two speakers in them, it can't be about the size, because even those tiny netbooks can accommodate two speakers in their cases.

So why? I really don't know what Dell was thinking!

Just out of curiosity, for the 5-6 hour run-time with the 6 cell battery, what were the specs of the machine? For example, did you get the "premium" LED screen, or did you just have the regular true-life screen?

The Vostro 1220 sounds like a great ultraportable that also packs a lot of power. I also don't really get the mono-speaker though - sticking two speakers on the vostro can't be that much harder/more expensive.

I got the Vostro 1220 from the outlet today...looks good. Regular true life screen is very bright, and clear.

they gave me two power bricks? what's with that? I'm not complaining :)

The single center speaker on bottom doesn't make a difference to me because I used headphones or externalsl for music and things that matter. For say, Hulu, all I want is a clear center channel for dialogue...so no worries there for me. It seem very light to me after lugging around a precision m4400everywhere I go.

The unit looks new....only thing that looks slightly preowned is the led panel bove the function keys...very slight little 'character marks' you can see if you tilt it in the right light; rest of laptop and lid looks flawless.the little panel appears to be a separate piece...it's OK as it is and I'm pretty much a perfectionist, but I might call dell for grins and tell them I want a new one....:) There is refurb sticker on the bottom on the notebook.

Keyboard is pretty great, no flex and large enough that I adapted right away. Screen at 12 inches is big enough to keep me from going blind with my trifocals.

Very happy with it, Vista Basic and all....battery meter says I'll have around 4 hours with the screen turned up all the way bright.... I'm also using a BT mouse as I type this.

I'd say go for it from the outlet if you want this unit....

I'll answer any questions, but now busy putting Ubuntu 9.10 on it.....I'm leaving a very small Vista Basic partition to facilitate BIOS upgrades, etc.

    oh yeah, seems pretty fast....:)
