It seems the heat issue is common on M4400. Could it be because it's a workstation card? I don't think so right? Are you going to tell Dell about it?

Interesting. No hard-locking (so far) is good, but down-clocking is bad. I hope Dell releases this new A07 BIOS soon so that we can see if it really solves the down-clocking issue. According to some reports, the temperatures measured just prior to the commencement of down-clocking are not very high, which suggests that heat might not be the issue (and hence a software/BIOS fix might still be possible). Here's hoping!

Yes, I say the same thing! Software issues are so much more hopeful than hardware/physical issues!

I overclocked mine yesterday to 675/921 [core and memory only,no shader adjustment]to see if I could get mine to degrade but it didn't,this was only running 3dmark a couple of times though,I will try those clocks in a game and see what happens.
Ambient temp here is still low [17-18 max] and I am wondering whether I will get others problems when late summer is giving near twice that ambient temp.

@m477hew,congrats on your LONG awaited precision, hope your's is going to be ok,seems to be becoming a bit of a lonely club of owners on this forum that don't have any issues................would be good to see a pic under the bottom cover on yours to see if they have given the FX 1700M model a larger heatpipe than mine....if/when you can be bothered of course;)

@I*RAM.....I wonder if, because its a workstation, dell don't test it with games, you would be hard pressed to get any software that load's cpu and gpu as much as a game does at the same time....mcad or FEA certainly doesn't from what I've seen, but maybe some of the animation stuff might......don't know,as I don't use it.
Still, cooling should not be application specific imo,and isn't an excuse.

    pic of 3dmark from overclocking...

Nice, you can overclock a 770M! Is that even safe, to get 1200 3DMark06 points higher? Would you mind sharing how it can be done?

Just download the NVidia system tools. After installing it, you can overclock the FX 770 in the nvidia cpntrol panel.

I have XP, should I use system tools or nTune? I just tried an 700core/900mem (not that I know a thing about OCing) and my GPU temp went to 85C with Crysis WH demo on for 30 minutes. The game runs at mid-high settings runs at a constant 20-30FPS (40FPS when not battling) with OCing. Looks like I will be turning on nTune when I need to game if someone can confirm 85C is safe...though it doesnt sound it. And I'll probably be playing some of the more older games too (HL series, bioshock, etc.) so maybe it wont get that hot.

Yep,just use ntune, don't know why it doesn't have the shader clock adj,I thought the latest version did, maybe its because of the dell drivers.
Your gpu temps are now what I would have thought them to be before you messed with clockrate sliders......maybe if you want to be safe you could OC to 501/801,since changing the value seems to be working for you at the moment.

I just played Crysis warhead for an hour [675/921]and the temp maxed at 82 degC,which is around normal for mine,it also didn't seem to make the fps go up any amount which is typical of overclocking a low or midrange GPU in my experience......increases 3dmark scores....does jack to actual game performance.

I would go for the NVidia system tools. ntune is not developed anymore, therefor think of the system tools as a new, advanced ntune.
