I mean I'm running Windows 7 64-bit, with Vista 64 drivers, except those mentioned. NVidia driver is Pre-release WDDM 1.1.

RAM with everything in use: 3200 out of 4083MB total / regular use 2900

Yeah, 100+ is a lot. I normally keep 30-40 open, but when there is a lot of news, I go to the 100+ as I don't like to hit the back button. I just open all links and read them all in the end. I just take care that my Firefox is always set to use only one core as it can suck up all CPU if it is allowed.

How do you remove the processor clock cap? I think my system is constantly downclocking. After a couple minutes into 3d modeling on Aliasstudio.. the program crashes.. Within the past 2.5 hours, I've had atleast 20 crashes, no joke. I'm thinking about returning this notebook. I cannot work with it crashing like this.

Hello all, I'm looking into getting either the m4400 or a 15inch macbook pro and I was wondering if anyone here had buyers remorse about purchasing the m4400. The specs for each are not my concern, a lot of you on this thread have had your machines for several months now and I was hoping to get some feedback on the, relatively, long term satisfaction or dissatisfaction you have. Thanks in advance.

That's a very tricky question. If you'll use the Mac for OS X than it is a matter of preferring Windows Vista or Seven (as that's what you can use for the next few years) to OS X. Only you can tell. That's a passionate discussion.

If it is to use Windows, the only reason I see to buy the Mac is to have the option to use OS X whenever you like. Otherwise Apples are normally pretty good, but you can get a better spec with a better support for less buying a Dell. And considering your current Notebook the difference to the M4400 is huge on daily usage. I had a similar one to yours, and my feeling was that I never knew what a good notebook was before the M4400 (despite some small audio glitches you can check on my posts before and the fan noise post below, which seems to be solved by chance). But you have to consider people's comments on this thread. Some have bigger issues.

Fan: MUCH QUIETER. People with fan running too much should read on (Iguess). :)

As I mentioned earlier, I had that noise ("candy wrapper noise") coming from either the HD or the fan. Dell came here and changed the HD. He also took out the fan as suggested, but it was OK, there was nothing to do, so he just placed it back. I've been using the PC intensively for a few days and the noise is gone. Might have been only the HD or the taking out and back of the fan. I don't know. But...

The fact is that my computer overall is much quieter. It can be only an impression, but I am almost sure it is quieter. The fan does not jump starts as often as it did. So I am assuming the new HD is generating much less heat than before. My original HD was a Seagate 250GB 7200 RPM. My new one is a Samsung with same specs. Can it be? Or can it be that the fan was somehow stucking, and then would spurt and make noise to compensate the heat accumulated? Unlikely.

I am not an expert on hardware but I thought this could be of help to people who are complaining about the fan making too much noise (which was my only almost glitch with M4400, along with audio issues reported blah, blah, blah).

I've been using my M4400 for about a week, and I've run into a couple issues I wanted to get community feedback on. Install is Vista x64.

    1. The display (samsung RGBLED Truelife) has a lot of flicker, particularly when it first starts up. It is pretty irritating for a minute or two, then calms down. Is this typical with this display?

    2. The machine tends to go into torch mode (full brightness) after resuming from sleep. Ambient light sensor is off.

    3. Keyboard problem. Sometimes when I'm typing rapidly, the system will move the cursor. For example, I might be typing along in this quick reply box and suddenly the cursor will jump up 3 or 4 lines so I'll be inserting text into the wrong place. I figured this was my finger hitting the touchpad or something, but it has happened a couple of times now when I know I didn't. Has anyone run into this, either as a hardware or software problem?

I had this happen a lot in the beginning. I also had a problem that the font size would change suddenly in messenger and could be changed back only by closing the chat window and reopening. The reason for this was that I must've hit the zoom on the touchpad by accident. I disabled the zoom option and since then I havent had the zoom thing happen at all and only now and then your problem.

Hey bytre, what bios/video driver versions are you running? I believe that display issues you mention appeared in earlier versions, and my be addressed with an update from Dell's download site.

For the keyboard/ scroll issues, I would try adjusting settings in Control Panel, the scroll and zoom features embedded at the bottom and to the right side of the touchpad can be sensitive.
