hey, awesome build bytre, congrats on the new machine - I am very curious if the battery slice can double as a coolslice. How much separation is there (if any) between the bottom of the notebook and the battery?

A couple millimeters, about as thick as the rubber feet on the bottom of the m4400. I haven't seen the cool slice so I don't know how that compares. The battery slice has to be removed before docking and has to be charged independently, which limits its usability. It would have been a lot better if the battery slice had a passthrough from the docking station.

The machine came with the A12 BIOS installed. I upgraded to A13, got my $40 4GB RAM and $100 500GB HD installed, norton security installed, and starting on my other apps.

Which processor do you have? It looks like its misinterpreting the cpu ID of the processor.

Download CPU-z from http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php, free software which will give you more detailed information about your processor.

    Hi
After a prolonged research between Studio XPS 16, Sony 390JB and M4400, I decided to go for M4400.
    The specs are:
    :precision M4400, Intel Core 2 Duo T9550, 2.66GHz, 1066MHz 6M L2 Cache, Dual Core
    :4.0GB, DDR2-800 SDRAM, 2 DIMM
:Internal Backlit English Keyboard for Mobile Precision
    :512MB NVIDIA Quadro FX 770M
    :250GB Hard Drive 9.5MM 7200RPM FFS
    :Swipe Fingerprint Reader
:Black Wide Screen WUXGA RGB-LED LCD
:Windows XP PRO SP3 with Windows Vista Business LicenseEnglish
    : Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth 2.1 Minicard
    :Internal MDC Modem
    :8X DVD
    :Integrated webcam with microphone
    :Intel WiFi Link 5300 (802.11 a/g/n 3X3) 1/2 MiniCard
:15.4 inch Wide Screen WUXGA RGBLED LCD
: Integrated 0.3MP VGA web cam w/ microphone
    : 3 yrs warranty

and I was able to keep my budget around 2k. Though Studio XPS 16 and Sony got blu ray drive around this price, i thought the performance would be far better in precision. Win-XP was another reason with Vista Business free upgrade.

Ordered, scheduled to be shipped before 04/21/2009.

    Any thoughts.. suggestions??

It's the fan. I had the same issue. I opened up the bottom, pulled the fan out, dissassembled it and found a bit of glue on the central magnet. I cleaned it off, lubed the fan with some silicon spray and presto... Never heard that sound again.
BTW, I would only hear that sound when the fan would spin down. Because of this, I thought it was something else as well. Finally, it really does sound like a candy wrapper being crushed.

    Hope this info helps.
    Cheers!

    Hi everyone,
I have figured that when my M4400's power is unplugged (running on battery) the system especially the graphics slows down enormously, I did all power configuration to high performance and it doesn't work at all.
How can I fix this issue?

Thanks. I thought HD or fan. I spoke with Dell, made some test. The HD test passed, but did it several times and one/two time when I started the test the noise came. They decided to change the HD. Although I don't like to waste anyone's money with unnecessary exchanges, it is too late. The technician is coming today, I cleaned up my HD (my money/time on the line)... So I guess I'd better let him change the HD and I'll talk about the fan so he can check it out, clean it up and I cover all sides. Your post is very helpful, and I enjoyed that you like my description! :)

That's basically my laptop sans the screen...is that a DVD burner you have in there? Not just a reader, right? I'd go for the burner if not.
