Precision 7720 Owner's Thread

You can use the dock without the spacer. The spacer just makes it easier to attach the system to the dock. (It doesn't increase the footprint of the dock.) They moved the port to the very back of the system when it used to be an inch or so away from the back, so you can't rely on just putting the system as far back as it will go on the dock and then lying it down to get it to connect (unless you have the spacer).

 

Hmm, OK - I guess I just saw this image (posted by song_1118 in the Precision 7730 will cancel the E-Port DOCK interface thread) and thought it seemed like a ridiculously stupid waste of space. I didn't realize it was all caused by moving the dock to the back of the laptop. Still a shame, space-wise... but OK.

 

Yeah, the footprint is going to be the same whether or not you have the spacer installed. The spacer just helps with positioning when docking and that is all.

 

If anyone is interested, I've successfully upgraded my laptop from the 1600 x 900 Screen, to a 4k Screen I picked up from ebay:

Notes:

• It looks like all the bezel's (not just 4k) are the same.
• The eDP port on the laptop's Motherboard is a 40 pin. Depending on the monitor you're using, it may convert to a 30pin eDP for lower resolutions
• I upgraded from 1600 x 900 to 4k (3840 x 2160), so that means your laptop should be capable of performing the upgrade

 

I presume people have seen that a new BIOS update is expected next week, to fix Intel vulnerabilities? According to this link, next Monday (7/2/2018) for the 7520 & 7720, and 8/6/2018 for the 7510 & 7710:

Wow, I hope they spend more time testing than with the microcode update from earlier this year, what a mess...

 

I'll be happy to be one of the guinea pig testers, since I'm starting with a fresh build anyway...

 

I might be looking into getting this model. Is there any unlocked bios made available for this model?

 

Hi All,

In need of some help running an Oculus Rift. I've got an AMD WX 7100 on my Dell 7720. There's "No HDMI connection" during set up, "no displays connected to AMD Products" in the AMD Settings. But the headset mirrors the desktop image. I've downloaded numerous drivers with no luck. AMD hasn't responded to my support ticket. Oculus tried helping with no luck. Listed below are the current specs. Any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.
