Precision 7720 Owner's Thread

I'm using a 240W adapter that came with the computer. Should I be using one with a higher wattage?

I have also had the GPU and mainboard replaced during the services.

I remember asking some time ago if anyone could share his/her service tag number and I was told that nobody should ever do that. It looks like everyone can easily find bunch of them just by googling, you can try it yourself: "precision 7720 site:www.dell.com/support/ inurl:servicetag". I think someone forgot to disable the search engine indexing.

 

Has anyone been having weird crashy issues with their 7520?

After coming from an E6420, this 7520 has been a massive upgrade (faster CPU, FHD, IPS, full sized keyboard, dual drives, four RAM sockets)... but it hasn't been very reliable.
- NVMe and SATA drivers had to be put back to Microsoft default (the NVMe was aftermarket), otherwise it would crash on sustained loads.
- The dreaded docking station issue where you sleep the laptop, put it in the dock and it doesn't wake up, forcing you to power-cycle. And vice versa.
- Random instances where the screen just goes white or green or blue and you can tell the system froze because the capslock doesn't toggle anymore. I've turned off Intel graphics in the BIOS, I've updated the Intel and AMD drivers and BIOS (1.10.2, will need to try the latest), no change. The only thing which comes to mind is maybe the "optimized" thermal setting isn't cooling the GPU enough, since I remember seeing some old school PCs possibly freezing like that when the GPU overheated.

Also, I'm using a 135W adapter in power-saving desktop, everything charges fine (just that I got the warning saying it might eat into the battery if I use sustained high GPU loads with the current adapter). Anyone experience any issues with using the lower wattage adapters?

Loadout: i7-7700HQ, WX4130, Samsung 960 PRO 512 (aftermarket), 2TB Seagate HDD (swapped from the original 500), 16GB RAM (8GB original, 8GB Kingston ValuRAM, nothing in the keyboard sockets), 1920x1080p IPS non-touch.

 

Have you checked the CPU clock speed while running under load? Normally, using a low-powered adapter forces it to run pretty slow.

I'm trying to use it as a Simple Display Port adapter, but to no avail.

 

From the product description:

• Note: This adapter supports Thunderbolt 2 devices and Thunderbolt displays. It does NOT support DisplayPort displays like the Apple LED Cinema Display or third-party DisplayPort and Mini DisplayPort displays.

 

The description says that it is not for display output.

I've used this one and can confirm that it works with a 4K/60Hz display with both the Precision 7510 and 7530.

Can you turn on/off NFC as it is shown here?

I have installed the latest drivers and firmware, but I see no such option on my system.

Another question: I found out that Dell Data Protection Security Tools is no longer supported by Dell and they even recommend to uninstall it. What do you use instead for pre-boot authentication with a finger print or a smart card?
