The TB16 "should" charge the laptop battery. However, you wouldn't want to use it for anything other than charging. With only 130W of power delivered, the Precision will run in a heavily throttled state. 130W is Dell's limit for a single Thunderbolt connection (doesn't matter what power supply is actually attached to the dock), and the Precision throttles probably more than necessary when an under-powered power supply is attached. (Disclaimer: Haven't tried this myself, but I don't see why it would be different than it was with the 7710 and 7720.)

You can use the TB16 with a separate 240W power supply attached directly to the laptop and that will work fine.

I do still have my TB16 from my XPS 15. Is there any hard in trying it with my 7730?

The reason I’m looking at the TB16 is because I can pick up a slightly used dock for less than half the price of the new TB18.

Not sure how much difference it makes, but my 7730 does not have a dedicated GPU, just the Intel UHD 630. I have the i7-8750H with 16GB ram. I am thinking this configuration shouldn’ need all of “240W” of power.

It doesn't matter if it "shouldn't need" the power or whatever. It will still throttle the CPU hard. The Precision is very aggressive about throttling when you are using what it considers to be a low-powered adapter.

You can escape throttling with tools like ThrottleStop but only when you are logged on and the tool is started. So in case of installing or updating Window where lots of work is done without you being able to log on and run a tool your machine will be throttled and those tasks can take for ever. My old m6800 run at 400-500 Mhz with 130w adapters. Didn't try that with my 7730 so far.

So you will loose some comfort.

You do slightly lift the entire assembly and slide it out towards you and it all comes out in on piece. The most troublesome thermal pads are the two very small rectangular thermal pads under that movable flap piece between the GPU and the back edge of the chassis. I can tell you when you finish repasting and slide the heat sink assembly back into place those are a major PITA to replace properly where they should be over those small components which generate a lot of heat and under the flap. It can be frustrating.

For those who might want to install the new Intel Graphics DCH driver on the 7530/7730 I tried and it looked like everything installs without problems (and automatically cleaning up existing standard driver) BUT after restarting the computer there is no Intel Graphics Settings/Control Panel in the taskbar anymore or Intel Graphics Settings available via the right-click desktop context menu. Other than that it looks like it's using the new driver, but I wanted the control panel to customize display and power manager settings so I reverted back to an image I took before trying.

The Intel HD Graphics Control Panel is now a Windows Store app. It was automatically installed on my 7510 (I found it in the Start Menu).

The Intel Control Panel from the store does not work for me:

"Intel Graphics Driver is not available. Check the driver status and then launch the application."

I guess this is related to the Intel HD Graphics Control Panel Service which is not willing to run. When I start it, the Service Control Manager gives this:

    ---------------------------
    Services
    ---------------------------
The Intel(R) HD Graphics Control Panel Service service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs.
    ---------------------------
    OK
    ---------------------------

Anyone else seeing this? Any ideas how to fix it.

The behavior is the same with the first DCH build 6448 and the latest 6471.
