Precision 7510 Owner's Thread

I'm seeing the 7510 finally available with the Thunderbolt port. I was told Feb. 18 by a chat agent a few days ago, and indeed. I see also the fingerprint reader is coupled with the Tbolt port.

 

Just ordered a TB3 7510! My order status is pre-production and is estimated to deliver on March 1st.

I know that on the previous generation mobile precision a dell labeled the slots A,B,C,D. A & B were on the bottom with C & D on the top. Dell had a document showing to fill slots A&B first if using just two memory modules. It doesn't directly answer your question and it might be totally different in the new systems. But I would probably load the bottom two slots.

I would call and ask dell support to know for sure about dual channel mode, or maybe user Mano will be able to reply with answer.

 

My laptop came with one 8GB stick. I would think Dell put that stick at the bottom (primary) and not at the top (secondary, under keyboard). I opened the base cover at the bottom and the two primary slots are empty. Now I have to open the keyboard to get to that 8GB stick to remove it. I have two 16GB stick (32GB dual channel set). Should I add them to the top (secondary) while I have that opened or should I just put them at the bottom (primary). I'll try get in touch with Dell sometime tomorrow if I'm available. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

 

My M4800 came with ram installed in the "primary slots" beneath the keyboard. When I added more, I was able to put the two additional modules in the "secondary slots" on the bottom of the laptop which is nice since they're much easier to get to.

Generally they install memory under the keyboard first, to make it easier for you to upgrade later (you don't have to remove the keyboard to install new modules). Of course, if you plan on discarding the original memory, then it actually is adding more trouble.

There won't be a performance difference if you choose to install the new memory under the keyboard. I'd say go ahead and do that, if you have to open it up anyway, it leaves the easier-to-reach bottom slots open in case you want to upgrade again later.

 

You will loose dual channel if you don't put memory (on similar pairs) next to one another.

In your case, if you plan to keep 8gb and add 2x8gb, you'll loose dual channel. No matter which slots anything is in, so to that aspect it won't matter.

If you take out the 8gb, and add 2x8 gb under keyboard, you will gain dual channel.

So Dell send technician again, with a new motherboard and the laptop was on and powered up while he was here. He installed a new motherboard and laptop is completely dead. Will not turn on. I refused to have them sent me another motherboard, at this point I guess I have to pluck down another 3500 and get the thunderbolt or should I run since it will be my third laptop that doesn't work on the 7510

 

I just placed another order for $3300 with thunderbolt arrives march 6th, hopefully this one will not have problems
