These look like pretty nice machines, but I am not will to purchase until there is Linux support. After waiting 2 months to see if that would happen, I ended up ordering the System 76 Oryx Pro. For my needs (IE, I don't need a Quadro or 4K display), the specs are very similar and it already supports Linux. Price is usually not the deciding factor for me, but it didn't hurt that the Oryx Pro was about $400 cheaper.

Good point. I'm also going to use Dell 7710 on Ubuntu OS and run a lot of virtual OS as well. System 76 Oryx Pro doesn't seem premium. It runs on I7 core skylake, but this processors are not ECC. The main reason for having Dell 7710 is really the Xeon processor who supports ECC. Why you think Dell 7710 is not supporting Linux? I didn't get what you mean by 'not supporting Linux" ?

I think he means that its not shipping w/ linux as the OS and/or they didn't make sure every component currently works with linux. Sometimes if you buy a new computer, some components like the wifi card, don't work out of the box with linux.

It might be this drive support for Linux based OS that you were referring to be involved, but this should be a reason to boher. I am pretty sure that Dell and the rest of the component manifacvturer had though about this with the processor and gra[hics drives for Linux. It will be quite strange if this would be a problem. I am not going to use WIN at all, only on vitual machine for few applications.

Thankfully due to HP providing detailed QuickSpecs for the ZBook Studio (why don't you do this, Dell?) and corroborated by other leaks there'll be a new mobile Xeon chip - the Xeon E3-1545M, which Intel will be launching in '1H16', though most people think this will be January 2016.

The *big* difference about the 1545M over the 1535M and 1505M is that it has the P580 graphics instead of the P530 - in other words, Iris Pro, or the fabled GT4e. Many people will say why GT4e integrated graphics matters in a laptop with discrete graphics - well because of the embedded SRAM, which is used by the CPU as a whole as an L4 cache. It's also why the Broadwell Core i7 5575C outperforms the Skylake 6700K on the desktop.

Combined with Mano_G's statement there'll be new configurations coming, you can bet pretty safely that these new configs will at least include the 1545M. However, given HP is publicly stating the ZBook Studio will be available with the 1545M, there is absolutely no reason for Dell's secrecy in regards to the future configuration options of their Precisions. In fact, I'd argue their secrecy is downright hurting them, because I'm more inclined to look at the ZBook Studio than Dell, because I can determine exactly what I want with the configuration I want and eliminate the guess work.

And then of course, with the 1545M and launched with Iris Pro graphics, it's exactly what Apple is waiting for to flood the market with the MacBook Pro...

By then, also Samsung will be launching their 4TB 2.5" SSD and the 1 & 2TB NVMe drives too, so you can get that goodness.

So what ever happens, now that Dell have ballsed up their introduction with the 5510 not providing a single USP over the XPS15, there's no point other than to wait for the next batch of CPUs from Intel and the RAM to be made available.

But seriously - for the new motherboard configurations, please make sure Dell has that damned PCIe Interposer for the 5510 and ECC memory. Those 2 features elevate the 5510 to a beast instead of being unbuyable.

QuickSpecs doesn't have 17' version, which is redicilous for me. I play big this time, no compromises with the screen! I'm sick of overpriced laptops without anything really valuable in the screen.

17' is definitely what I would call "going big".

I really like the Quick Specs document HP got going there....very informative. After reading and looking at the HP Studio line, I can feel the buyers remorse kicking in. The extra TB port, on-board RJ45 & P580 graphics is very tempting for me (Xeon 1545m would be a bonus). Given we are a Dell shop here at work, I doubt I could get approval paying regular price for the HP Studio....although this time the Dell corporate rate for the 5510 was same as the advertised Dell.ca website price with the "30%" discount.

I believe Dell rushed to the gates to be the first before the refreshed MBPro & HP Studio would capture the market.

Well, this is better story to tell :) By the time when all these models of HP, Dell and Lenovo are released, I think only the design and few small details might be getting in the way while choosing which one ;)
