Let us know what offer you find (coupon?) I have 3 things I would like: a xeon, thunderbolt or a minimal configuration (with my must haves) under $2K. So far I am still waiting.

On 5510 what's the point of a xeon without ecc support. ?
These xeons can't be overclocked either

I second that question but for different reasons - I believe they are going to also offer more powerful CPU's and I want to get the top one offered now. I know there is a premium charge now but since I keep my laptops a minimum of four years, I feel it is a decent investment to keep the laptop "current" for a longer time.

The incremental speed bump to extra cost ratio on the the Xeons over the 6820K -- today or in 4 years -- is only likely to be worth it it you're in a "time is money" situation. Which is going to be true for more people buying the Precisions than other machines, but still...

The main reason to get the Xeon is ECC support. If you're doing kinds of professional work where it matters, the time lost to recovering from the wrong crash (or worse, lost data, or worse still, corrupted data you only catch later) can easily cost more time or money or both in a single incident than the time saved by the higher clock speed in the 3-4 year life of the machine (and the incremental cost of the Xeon + ECC memory is probably only a few hours of your/your employer's billing rate.)

Thanks for the suggestions. It looks as though they are only offering ECC memory up to 32GB - do you think there will be a change (up to 64GB) or is there an inherent limitation as to ECC memory size?

Yeah but shipping the 7710 and 7510 without Thunderbolt 3 now is like selling a car with 3 tires. ;)

I might have used a different analogy but you are correct - Thunderbolt 3 is the future especially for those of us editing/grading large 4K video files. Pairing that with the new generation of external SSD's such as Sandisk 1.92TB with a USB 3.1 connection with read/write in the 850 range, its like having a half dozen standard HDD's set up in RAID 0 array. I suspect that within 2-4 years there will be several Thunderbolt 3 ports on both laptops and desktops (Lenovo Thinkpad P70 has 2) and that USB 3.0 will go the way of 2.0.

HP notebook workstations have 2 thunderbolt ports.

Since this is 1st Gen tech I suspect cost is big factor in unit builds.

    My 2 cents
