If anything it'd be in solidworks. We're talking about panel designs though and I'm usually programming those panels, not doing the design -- just pinch hitting occasionally when the design team is drowning in work. layout and such has traditionally been in 2D in autocad and is only now moving towards solidworks because they made it easy to build up the library of parts. 95% of day to day things the GPU would be a nonissue, I just felt it'd be stupid to get less power out of that area because that's the only thing offered in the Precision line.

I'm not sure of course, but looking at some articles on the latest Samsung PCIe NVMe M.2 .... Samsung makes an OEM versions which are probably in the Precisions.

    http://www.anandtech.com/show/9650/samsung-announces-950-pro-ssd-their-first-consumer-vnand-nvme-ssd

    * that article is from a couple months ago though, so it may be old news or old tech by now

I'll probably just wait to see what SSD brands/models begin to appear from Dell as other buyers purchase their systems. Then I'll probably purchase SSD from a source other than Dell, depending on a few factors.

Apparently there are not many makers of m.2 NVMe ssd. Samsung, Intel, Toshiba.

I believe the Surface Pro 4 uses Toshiba XG3 ssd but there is very little SPEC info about these drives.

Anandtech testing shows very respectable ssd performance levels on the SP4.

    My 2 cents

Has anyone else heard about an update to the 7710 configurator the first or second week of December in which the Thunderbolt 3 option as well as 64GB of ECC RAM will be available?

Heard this from 2 different chat people on the Dell business website.

I wouldn't trust that. A Dell rep told me on the chat that Thunderbolt is already available. Our business account manager @ Dell told me that Thunderbolt is in the system. However, only when I asked him to put a clear note in the sales quote that the port is included (and then I would place the order), did he come back to me saying it'll be available in January.
They can tell you anything they want - but the systems are built purely based on what the quote says. It doesn't matter whatever anyone said to you. That's why I requested that the note about the port is put in the quote (BTW, the first quote he's given me had the price 300 EUR higher than for the exact same system built on the website). Cheeky bastards, those reps, they're only interested in their targets, otherwise they're clueless.

I wasn't configuring the unit to buy and I told both of them (reps) I didn't want to buy now - I just had one specific question about the Thunderbolt 3 - they said it would come with the configurator update the first week of December. One rep told me he would email me when it was available so I didn't have to check the website so often.

Also, my Dell business rep said Dell has a reputation for bringing out products earlier than expected - they all expected the XPS 15 late November and it was released in October.

Time will tell, as they say.

I've been misinformed by the chat reps more than I've received accurate information from them, I think.
