Next Generation Dell Precision Mobile Workstations press release

Looks like Dell stuck a numpad on to the E7450 kb.

As I'm in the UK, I'm kinda stuck with that horrible EU layout that Dell created. The current Precision keyboards have a nice and large enter key in comparison:

It's not like the Precision chassis is wanting in space for nice and large keyboard.

With the exception of the swapped Fn and control keys, this is still the best laptop keyboard ever made:


7 row layout, large Esc + Del. F keys are separated out in to blocks of 4 keys (something that aids usability as it provides a tactile reference). Dedicated volume control with mic mute.

 

I am massively disappointed by the island keyboard. I hate island keyboard more than I hate anything.

 

I am personally happy to see a pair of M.2 PCIe slots. I am already using an M.2 drive that can hit 1,400Mb/s reads - which is 40% faster than what my M6700 can do with 2 normal SSDs in RAID0. Samsung just announced 950 Pro drives that will do 2,500Mb/s reads and 1,500Mb/s writes at a capacity of 512GB and a retail price of $349.99. I expect the price on Newegg to be lower. M.2 PCIe will be 5X as fast as SATA SSDs. It is a huge jump. Think about a pair of M.2 PCIe drives in RAID0 hitting 5Gb/s reads - 5 Gigabytes a second!

 

I've found the keyboard on my E7450 to be very usable (even the narrow Enter key hasn't caused problems in actual usage). It's not the keycaps poking through holes in the palmrest that some other manufacturers have used but a removable keyboard unit with slightly smaller key caps than previously that is held down by some screws in the gaps (which prevents the perpetual complaint of bounce in the keyboard unit) with plastic trim to cover over the screws. The arrangement for the E7450 is shown here. The new Precisions could, however, be different.

I have info that the release date will be October 15th, at least in the UK.

 

Well VGA has been obsolete for some time now and eSATA has always be hampered by its inherent lack of power and therefore connection complexity. No loss of either in my book but a rear USB port needed to have been included since the connection of external drives are inherent to my media requirements.

As to the consumer keyboard...hate it.

 

Thank goodness they are keeping physical touchpad buttons - I refuse to buy anything with a single integrated pad.

 

In the video below it is mentioned that the 5510 will also support Intel Xeon CPUs. If that's true, then WOW... It will be interesting to see how they manage the cooling system which has always been great on dells systems.

After watching that I doubt I would go for the 5510 as it does not have a dedicated number pad in the keyboard and I do not want a touch screen, preferring a high res matte screen.

Wonder why they still have two USB 3.0 ports and not 3.1. I know he say it also has one thunderbolt 3 type c.

Why is the battery life indicator on the side? I really do not see the point in that, surely it should be on top so I can see it easily. Weird.

Must say that the thin bezel is very attractive though.

Would like to see a similar video about the 7710.
