I appreciate all of the information that has been made available in this thread. Could you also please clarify as to whether the additional delay is for the Thunderbolt 3 port or for the Thunderbolt 3 docking station? In other words, will the Thunderbolt 3 port be present on the initial iteration of the 5510 or will there be a different port in its place?

The purpose of my questions is to determine what external display connectivity options will be available on the 5510 when it is released. Will the initial units just be limited to the HDMI port and therefore one external monitor or will it require a USB-based docking station for additional external monitors.?

The 5510 will launch with Thunderbolt 3 port on the system.

Can I jump in with a question on this?

I believe HDMI on this and the new XPS are only 1.4, so not enough bandwidth for 4k @ 60Hz 4:4:4 chroma.

Will the TB15 dock and the USB-C (to HDMI/VGA/Ethernet/USB 3.0) be able to pull this off?

Large screen TVs only have HDMI (no DisplayPort), so I want to be sure it will run 4k 60Hz 4:4:4 when going from the laptop TB port -> adapter/dock -> HDMI cable -> external display

I run a lot of virtual machines. Will I notice the difference between the i7-6700HQ in the XPS 15 and the Xeon in the Precision? Or is this negligible? I don't use any CAD programs. I do however use Matlab to learn about image compression.

This is a little unrelated, but I know some people in this thread are keen on sticking with Windows 7 on their newly purchased PC, so I thought it might be a useful nugget of information.

Microsoft has started a 1-year countdown on killing sales of new machines with Windows 7. (Or rather, they silently updated the end-of-sales sheet with a new date.) After October 31, 2016, Windows 7 will not be offered on new PCs.

It will still be possible to use Windows 7 on new PCs after this time, but you will have to jump through more hoops to get it, and we will likely see driver support dry up.

Heheh, that's very funny. Certainly businesses show no sign of being keen on migrating to Windows 10, and consumer reaction has been quite mixed as well, to say the least.

Privacy related concerns apart, I'll take Windows 10 any day over 7. Its just a lot more snappy if not the new features . it'll be a must if universal apps take off.

They are planning to migrate over the next few months to Win10 in my Office either way.

"Universal apps" taking off? On what planet would that be? On the one I live on, it's an excellent approximation to say that there are zero "apps" available that would be worth having, and Windows Phone remains as dead as a doornail.

The "snappiness" of Windows 10 is a fairytale, as any kind of "snappiness" on any new OS has always been. There is no meaningful, objective difference in performance. It's all silly little mind games; turn off all of the GUI features in Windows 7 to make it look as bland as Windows 10, and there is no perceptible difference.

either you missed the "if" or ignored it because you had an axe to grind. also not sure why you got Windows Phone in the picture. WP is dead. Win10 is different beast

uApps are lot more than WP. Microsoft seems to want to replace Win32 with Universal runtime. Office is already on the universal App path. Its a matter of time before Win32 App makers like Adobe follow.

There are quite a few features i like.

I would disagree with that. I have run into a few issues, but nothing major, and my workflow has definitely speeded up since I installed Windows 10. I am now doing the work I needed to do faster than ever.

Frankly I could not be paid to go back to Windows 7, I personally find Windows 10 to be an enormous improvement. It's not perfect, and there are major areas for improvement, but it is much better than 7.

I am looking forward to getting a machine that is supposed to have 10 as I was not supposed to upgrade my M6600 I believe.
