I moved it from 8740w tread.
With standard voltage @1.05v I can hit 820/1020 on m7820
I've no idea how to increase the voltage? As I've read you increased it to 1.15v (8740w)

Yep, I think it was designed for better cooling. My Dell FX 3800M ran cooler than the MXM version in my W701ds. The heatsink on the Dell's is HUGE.

My 3800M is on 45-50°C (113-122°F) in idle mode. In games it's on 85°C (185°F) and with the BurnIn test (FurMark) it goes up to 92° (198°F).
Is that really cooler than the W701ds?

    Cheers,
    Alex

BTW: Heatsink and graphics card have been replaced 1 month ago. Before replacement I reached 98°C (208°F).

Not that hard. You need to extract the vBIOS with a program like GPU-Z, then modify it in Radeon BIOS Editor and reflash with ATI WinFlash.

I'm about to order a new m6500. I was waiting for the 6600, but after reading here that they downgraded the screen to 16:9, I'll stick with the 6500 and its 120 additional vertical pixels.

But I'm not sure about video options. My application is "primary system for stock market work while traveling." I will use the system to run VMware, allowing me to use the same "primary work system" (a .VMX) either on my desktop or in the laptop when traveling. I care very much about display real estate (and ability to drive external monitors), but I don't care at all about games, movies, or anything else "photorealistic".

Should I get the most basic video card (ATI M7820), or one of the upgrades? I am guessing that the basic one is fine for my needs. If upgrading would allow me to drive more external monitors or something, I would do it. But it sounds like (unless you get the docking station which I don't intend), the 6500 only drives one external 1920x1200 monitor. I would think the M7820 should have no trouble doing that for my non-gaming requirements, but I'd appreciate feedback on whether I should pay for the next card up.

I've never used or even seen an "RGBLED" display, and am embarassed to admit I don't really even understand what it is! Is it safe to assume that for my needs (stock market charts, no games), I don't need/want this option and should save the $300?

My plan is to have a ~60GB SSD mini-card boot drive (no longer offered by Dell), plus a 1TB or so HDD. My plan is to just order with the cheapest option (250GB), and then buy the real drives (both SSD and 2.5" HDD) from another source. Are there any "gotchas" I should know about here - a particular brand of mini-card SSD that I should favor or avoid because of its compatibility with the m6500?

Also, what gives with Dell's order page? It seems to make you choose one of the "base configurations", then customize from there. But the customization options are not the same! Why can't I just configure an m6500 the way I want it, and see all the possible options on one configuration page? Grrr...

    Thanks,
    xPat

xPat Try going to the "large Enterprise" section of the Dell website and configuring there. On the Canadian website that seems to give more options. Frustrating though as it seems to change day to day

Yeah it sucks, can't configure it with backlit keyboard, and when I go to the large enterprise section, I lose the $600+ instant rebate.
