    Hi All,

just got an i5, WUXGA RGBLED, M7820 configured M6500 from the outlet ($1080 after CA tax woohoo!). I popped in a Crucial C300 SSD and restored the Dell factory image that was on the D: partition of original hard drive to the new SSD drive. I hadn't read up on all this AHCI and TRIM stuff beforehand, but once I did, I rebooted, set the SATA controller to AHCI instead of RAID, and Win7 booted up fine (no BSOD). But how do I know if TRIM is enabled in Win7 and should I really care? It already boots up twice as quickly as the original HD and the one program (Pro/E) I installed on it also boots up much more quickly.

Anyways, just wanted to know if I did things right. I really don't want to re-install Windows and ask IT to reinstall Pro/E...I might actually get into some trouble for that because they'll be double charging our dept for the same task.

Well, its been almost a year since I replaced all my hard drive with two SSD from intel. And now most of the softwares I used (from Autodesk) are the latest. Thinking of doing a clean re-installation of my OS. But when I replaced the drive, I forgot to copy the recovery file. And the old hard drive is long reformated already. Is there a copy of the recovery file somewhere that I can download?

An update from me. I have found the cause of the occasional freezing problem I was facing. I switched from Hynix 16gb to Samsung 16gb and all is well. No more freezing and the system is running flawlessly. Now I'm debating whether to keep my M6500 permanently as a daily task machine. It seems trusty. :)

Do you think it will be possible to install M8900 instead of M7820 in M6500?

No. Dell has implemented MXM back into the Precision line.

    Finally!
Funny, they seem to screw something up with every new generation.

The M6500 would have been perfect with an MXM slot but the way it is now makes you pray that your graphics card won't blow up after the warranty is over because there is no reasonable way to replace it. My first graphics card gave up a month ago and the 1st replacement was defective too. (btw: the 2nd replacement works fine so far)
The M6600 seems to be a nice machine too - except for that crappy 16:9 display. And I still don't know what to think about that new sandy bridge remote shutdown "feature".

Well, I've got my 3rd replacement now. The only freezes (or rather: black screens) I get now are Firefox4 hw-acceleration related. If I turn it off the M6500 is stable. Maybe a driver issue.
Four years warranty left and it won't be my last replacement...

    Cheers,
    Alex

BTW: Got a new screen (E2E). My old one was a Samsung - now it's the LG. I don't know yet which one is better but they are for sure different :)
