    Hi mclagett,

I just saw your post. I havent been reading this forum for some time now as I gave up on using the M6500 as a Win 7 64bit DAW since nothing I tried managed to get rid of the audio dropouts and crackling when using it with my main audio interface, a Sonic-Core XITE-1. I am mainly using Cubase, but I also tried a few other sequencers though no joy there either. It did work fine when just using the M6500 internal soundcard but not with the XITE-1.

However I did also set up a Win7 32bit partition to use with my XITE-1 and that runs flawlessly. So I really cannot figure out what it is about Win7 64bit that makes it so glitchy but after several months trying out just about every possible workaround without success I gave up. It could still possibly be the 64bit drivers for the XITE-1, which by the way uses an Expresscard interface rather than firewire, but most other XITE-1 users have it running successfully on their systems, and the only other thing I havent been able to try is to disable C states in the M6500 BIOS, as those options are not available for us. It might be worth me asking if they could add those options but I think that is a low priority for Dell.

So are you using Cubase with Win7 64bit or 32bit. I switched to AHCI a few months or so after getting my M6500 just over a year ago. I cant remember if there was a massive difference with it set to AHCI instead of RAID, and was not an issue in terms of affecting the way I set my drives. It did mean having to reinstall everything when I changed over but no big deal here. Also I am running Intel RST driver and can check the version if you want to know. But since then, in Win7 32bit my M6500 runs Cubase and my XITE-1 flawlessly. But in Win7 64bit it just simply is a no go. Which is damned annoying but for now it will have to do until I can sort out another system that is guaranteed to run 64bit with my XITE-1.

Dont know if that helps much but if you need more info then do let me know, and it is great to see another M6500 user working with Cubase.

    Cheers for now

Not sure if I posted this already. Has anyone noticed the M6500 is actually pretty compact compared to the likes of W701 and other 17'' monsters? Comparing it with a W701 makes the M6500 looks like a 15.6incher.

Yep, before I got my 8740w (way back before anyone even got an 8740w, even), I'd pointed out that the 8740w is actually bigger than the M6500 (in terms of footprint). It's lighter, though, and, of course, has some features that the M6500 doesn't (to be fair, it's the same the other way around too).

    Hey,
I wrote about lack of colors in my dell M6500 WLED display... it was DELL Control Point fault. When its installed colors are messed up. Also there is no option like Color Control (Maybe changing color space will help). Do you know how to enable it?

You can find the color control in the Dell System and Device Manager.

Here are some benchmark details about a new MINI PCIe card:

renice 120 gb msata ssd review. - Page 2

The numbers are from the MINI PCIe version, not the mSATA version which exists as well. Does anybody know how "pure" MINI PCIe and MINI PCIe mSATA like we have in m6500 compare performance like? Should the results be the same or better or slower?

I did some tests for the 80GB Intel 310 mSATA SSD. You'll find the results in the wiki article that I linked in my signature:
    Dell Precision M6500 ? DebianforumWiki
    http://wiki.debianforum.de/wiki/ima...on_M6500_-_FCM-Slot_-_Intel_SSDMAEMC080G2.png

Unfortunately I don't know how to test different block sizes without my RAM falsifying the results by caching.

    Edit:
I think I just had an idea how to bypass the RAM. Give me another 12 hours to test it.

    Edit2:
I tried to emulate what Crystal Disk Mark seems to do by mounting a partition on the SSD with -o sync and copied some data from /dev/zero with dd, but the results were completely different than what I expected. So I guess there is some "special magic" used in Crystal Disk Mark.
However, I've found this review of the 80GB version:

    Hi all,

I may answer my own question:

Got the "Kingston HyperX PC3-12800 XMP" RAM modules (4x4GB) last week and they work flawlessly. The M6500 actually uses the XMP profile and switched to 1600 MHz (dual channel) with 9-9-9-27 timing (which is the same timing I had with 1333).

Now to the next upgrade: since Intel released a new Core i7 hexa core (no sandy bridge but already in 32nm) for the old socket I'm still hoping that they will release a mobile six core cpu for socket 989.

    Cheers,
    Alex

PS: Could anybody explain to me how to set a signature in this forum?

    I tried A06. Didn't work.
I'll try A06 in near future.
