    Thanks John, I suspected that might be the case but I wasn't sure.

    @John

    You said you don't actually hear any cracks etc. but dpc checker is showing red bars, right? Same case here and there is definetly nothing wrong with my hearing, i'm a spare time music producer and my hearing is pretty tuned so to say. What could cause the latency issues that wouldn't actually influence audio playback?
    Above is the situation in Vista64 while i do all my producing under XP using an external PCMCIA soundcard, same story...dpc shows full red bars up too 9000 while the IDT card isn't even enabled or installed and audio playback is perfect with using ASIO drivers...this is still one big mystery isn't it?

    I have the latency issues as well and noticed that if I disable my LAN, there will be fewer and small latency spikes. However, the latency issue does not cause any sound cracks/dropouts when listening to music or watching a movie. I will try the different matrix storage drivers later today.

    I haven't a clue about the cause. Sensibly, it is something to do with the SATA but what is it doing? Is the system taking more short sleeps between doing anything? It's not anything actually using significant CPU time. I also wonder whether high latency isn't a good indicator of crackling audio.

    This needs more investigation.

    from my experience, the dpc latency checker tool does correspond to audio dropouts only when it gets over about 15000 us. video dropouts are caused below that threshold. this driver is absolute trash, i get an average latency of 10,000 or thereabout.

    I tried to disable most devices on my E6400 and nothing happened until I physically removed the DVD player from the bay.

    As soon as I removed it, all values are normal. (green zone)

    Very similar to you, my latency jumped from <600us with 8.5 to >8000us with 8.7, the latency drops down to previous levels if I remove the optical drive.

    However I also couldn't actually hear any audio problems, I'll leave it installed for a bit to see if it bluescreens for me like the 8.6 did.

    What kind of bluescreens did you get? Did it identify a particular driver or dll?

    I don't utilize any version of the Intel Matrix Mgr and keep my wifi off for audio use and DPC latency checker stays below the red zone all the time now.

    I've gone through alot of laptops...the Latitude E6400 is hands down one of the best laptops I have ever had.

    To be honest I can't remember (I just checked the post I made here when it happened and I didn't note it at the time either) but I got two bluescreens within minutes of installing 8.6 havin ghad none before, so I reverted to 8.5, and had none since.

    So far so good with 8.7 (other than the latency issue which I wouldn't notice if it weren't for DPC checker).
