Hm, that is strange. I thought that 2x8 and 2x16GB shoule take same amount of power.

I figure that 8 chip modules might burn less power than 16 chip ones. So that kingston ram is out of question then, as it will probably cause random shutdowns.

mr_handy, tell me how much chips your ram have? And does turning of turbo boost in BIOS help with preventing shutdowns? I have linux, not sure there is powersave mode like in windows.

I noticed that I have some eye strain when using this laptop, checked the edid, it is BOE0653. It is BOE screen not AUO. Dell page says AUO for this service code. I wanted AUO because it is only sure to not have pwm, this BOE seems to be pwm. Does anyone haveboe also? It is too bright, and on low brigthenss seems to have PWM.

Also noticed I can not get 60hz in fedora, only 59. And spec says 60. It is possible to swap for AUO screen? Where to source it?

Above is the screen I have.

    http://www.panelook.com/B140HAN01.2_AUO_14.0_LCM_overview_18920.html

    http://www.panelook.com/B140HAN01.3_AUO_14.0_LCM_overview_23640.html

Above two are ones I am looking to get, cant decide.

14.0" LED FHD DISPLAY SCREEN IPS FRU 00HT622 B140HAN01.3 EDP 30PIN FOR T450s

I can get this one, but I am puzzled whether will thinkpad compatible FRU on it somehow interfere with workng on Dell. I know Lenovo requires that so you can change brightness level in Windows. But not sure about dell. Is that FRU soldered by Lenovo?

Yeah, shame it doesnt have it but I dont have those devices and I dont game so I dont need eGPU. On the other side I need good screen as I use computer for long time. Seems I should have ordered the LG screen from that review as it does not have PWM. I ordered the AUO B140HAN01.2 in the end because that was only one that was sure to send exact screen and not to send compatible replacement. It is marked to work with dell and I hope it is better than this BOA eyesore. We will see in coupe of weeks.

Hi guys! I'm currently looking at the 5480 quad core but the price is a bit too high for me for now. When do you guys recommend to wait for the price to drop. Also the price I'm looking at for an i7 is around 1.4k USD lol and last gen is only half the price? Was it this expensive last year?

They're 16-chip. I'll attach the CPU-Z readout in a "spoiler" after this if I can figure out how that works here. They were the least-expensive name-brand 32gb kit that Amazon had a little less than a year ago.

It was fine with 32GB until I installed the 2TB SSD (Crucial MX300). There is no single tunable like "powersave mode" in Linux in general ( there may be in some distributions) but there are a ton of power-related tunables to try if you have problems with heat or with shut-downs like I saw. That's probably better than turning off turbo-boost in the BIOS as you can switch them without rebooting.

Two places to get started on Linux power settings
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/powertop
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CPU_frequency_scaling
Neither of those are really all that Arch-specific; I run Gentoo on mine (but pretty much only while plugged in these days.)

    See also:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/5876...lock-my-cpu-or-disable-turbo-boost-lenovo-y50 -- you could combine that with an "acpid" script to disable turbo when on battery and another acpid script to turn turbo back on when you plug back in.

Thanks. I for now ordered that one kingston RAM and it works. now have 24GB. No issues so far. Both modules have 16 chips each. I might get 2400mhz second module of 16 as I found that one cheeper. If I decide to go 32GB that is. As for 2TB SSD, I wont put that much for sure, but I will want PCIe SSD in M.2 slot of say, 512gb. I checked also WWAN slot, it is empty. Not sure why I thought i have 4g. It seems that my phone 4g gets detected in Linux when I am in BT range

If you really have a BOE0653 or NV140FHM-N43 as it is called, I have a B140HAN01.2. It is not branded (it is used in a HP).
But are you really sure about it having PWM?

I am not 100% sure about PWM, but my eyes get sore sometimes. So I pulled the trigger and ordered B140HAN01.2. Checked tracking number, it already arrived to my country, not sure when will come to my mail. Next week maybe.

Im really sorry digging out this old post, but didnt find any means to send personal message.

paper_wastage, could you please tell if you applied any specific BIOS settings to make SSD in WWAN work?

A friend of mine recently purchesed TS256GMTS400 and its completely invisible both for BIOS and Windows... :(
