It all depends on the CPU of your laptop. the WWAN M2 port only work with SSD if you have a standard voltage cpu (i5 6440HQ), but not on a low voltage one (i5 6300U)
And the main 80mm M2 can work at full speed (x4) on standard voltage CPU, but (x2) on a low voltage..

Ok so the hq cpu is one I should get. But does it make difference it is i7 or i5? 32gb of ram also only goes with hq CPU, i figure

I presume you mean the 80mm M.2 slot as opposed to the 42mm slot used for the WWAN card.

Any quad core. They support a total of 16 PCI lanes whereas the dual core CPUs only support 12 lanes.

    Thanks for for replay John.

I have read the thread more thoroughly, seems there are reports of excessive heat in Linux. Did you guys have those problem with tlp installed? So far tlp have been a silver bullet for heat in my experience. I wonder why they don't put in default installs.

I got my e5470 yesterday, so far so good. It has only 8GB of RAM, need to upgrade it to 32GB. Do i need to update bios for this? I kept Windows when I installed Linux because of easy BIOS update.

Looks like I wont be adding two m.2 SSDs since I have 4G modem in slot. I will only look to update this m.2 sata SSD with bigger PCIE one down the road, and maybe put one more msata if it fits.

I have i5 6440hq, AUO FHD screen, pretty nice, and fully loaded with baclit dp kb, fingerprint, sc reader, nfc, bt. 4g. It cost me 500 euros, no warranty. But seems like new.

Only thing so far not working at all in Linux is fingerprint reader

As a matter of policy I would update the BIOS but the support for the RAM is at the chipset level unless the notebook manufacture deliberately includes a restriction in the BIOS (and I haven't seen any reports that Dell does this). The 6440HQ will support 64GB if you can find 32GB RAM modules although Dell's specs for the notebook indicates support for up to only 16GB. This usually reflects higher capacity RAM being hard to find when they wrote the specs so they didn't bother trying.

Thank you. One thing I noticed, I can not charge phone over USB when laptop lid is closed. Tried on every port. And my old X220T can do it on any USB port. Is there some bios setting for this?

Enable the USB powershare option in the BIOS > System Configuration (tap the F2 key a few times when the Dell logo shows on booting).

Hi thank you, I have set it up. I have another question.

This is the only memory I can get http://www.kingston.com/dataSheets/KVR21S15D8_16.pdf

I can not get those ripjaw GSKIL modules that people reported as working well. So my concern is whether this ripjaw memory that other people have, is it 16 chip or 8 chip solution? Two sided or one sided? Because this Kingston I can get is 16 chips on two sides, 8 per side from what I can tell reading that spec. I have expirienced that such memory can cause trouble. If those ripjaws that work are 8 chip I should search for 8 chip. Did someone report 16 chip memory to work? I can not get detailed specs of Ripjaws like I found for that KVR. They dont say how many chips

The i7-6820HQ has hyperthreading, a slightly higher clock speed, and a larger cache relative to the I5-6440HQ. The i5-6300HQ has a lower clock speed still. All three will handle memory the same.

Just to expand on this, quite a few of us in this thread have been running 32GB since much older BIOS revisions without any problem. I've had some electrical problems (spontaneous shut-offs on battery) with the unsupported combination of 32gb + a 2TB SSD that I think may be over-current related (as it happens at moments of CPU load, and switching the machine to "power-saving" in windows seems to avoid it) so there may also be some electrical limits.

    The E5480 formally supports 32GB.
