    Hi Community,

brilliant thread, I spend the last hour reading through it.

What is the state of M.2 SSD on the WWAN port? I could not get my ADATA Premier SP600 256GB, M.2 2242 to work. I do not have "SATA-3" to enable in the "Drives" Section of the UEFI. I am using version 1.8.3 from which I cannot downgrade. Is it UEFI version related or does it have something to do with the hardware version? By the way the ADATA works on the normal M.2 port.

    Cheers

Hard plastic in the same not-quite-black as the outside (same case, roughly, as the E5450, if you've seen those. I've got a sticker on my personal one a most of the non-technical people at my office have dual core E5450s) The only really visible external difference is one more USB port (the E5450 has no USB port on the side with the lock and SD card slots.)

I've run a 250gb 2.5" SSD + 128gb M.2 2242 drive in my WWAN slot. There's a post here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/new-latitude-5470.785426/page-10#post-10237459 that might be helpful. Perhaps the trick is AHCI instead of RAID?

Now I'm running an NVMe M.2. drive with my 128gb M.2 2242, and it's working just the same.

M.2. and Legacy mode might not mix.

    I have bought an E5470 with Windows 10 pre-installed on a 256GB SATA SSD.

My inclination is to begin again with a clean Microsoft-only installation, and I see Windows 10 now has a recovery option that does not require preparing an ISO on a USB stick. Does this work well?

I would like to have just a minimum partitioning scheme (main plus one for Bitlocker system), but I plan to run a VM or two inside that. Is there any Dell recovery area, and can I nuke it first within this type of installation routine?

Any gotchas to watch out for? I am thinking BIOS/drivers, Bitlocker\TPM issues, partitioning issues. Any Dell stuff worth keeping or putting back in?

I am hoping to get rid of this system just as soon as somebody releases a tall screen (3:2 or 4:3 ;-( ) laptop (not SB), so it would be nice to be able to put back all the factory stuff later on. Sorry if I've missed a similar question here.

I've had no problems living with the Dell factory installion - it doesn't contain much bloat.

If you do want to do a clean reinstallation of Windows then there are various Dell support guides. Put your service tag into the Dell support site and see what is listed for your notebook. You can also get all the latest drivers etc which you will need. Note that UEFI-enabled computers use the GPT partitioning system.

Does anyone with the HQ Core i5 or Core i7 CPUs feel like the fan doesn't run fast enough?
The thermal management seems to be poor (using current BIOS version). Also, the power management settings on the Dell Control software seem to have no effect on the fan RPM.

With video streaming and normal web use I'm getting a max temperature in the high 70s (in Celsius).
I'm currently on my second E5470...

The CPU idle temperature seems to be in the low 40s (again Celsius).

    Agree.

I think most business users would prefer no fan noise , while using the laptop on the table (not on lap).. so maybe that's why dell went for heat over noise?

I recall that one of my recent Dell notebooks (probably the E5570 which has, I think, the same BIOS as the E5470) had the problem of the heat produced by one thread running wasn't enough to get the fan running so the notebook bottom became uncomfortable warm (not good when in laptop mode) but the problem was noticeable when used on a desk.

If, as I think, the same BIOS is having to cover a number of hardware configurations (two notebook sizes, 15W and 35W CPUs, optional dGPUs) then trying to have one set of fan rules which works for all the combinations is a near-impossible task. Why Dell doesn't give users a simple control panel for fan operation is one of those perpetual mysteries. They could then make their own balance between heat and noise. It would be easy to code in system limits to stop melt-downs. As it it, the options in the Dell Power Manager appear to be ineffective. Another place with relevant options is the Cooling Policy in the Advanced power plan settings under Power Options. I have mine set to active on AC power and passive on battery but I've never done research to find out if changing the settings actually makes any difference.

The new 5480 and 5580 Latitudes are out, seemingly with the same storage configuration as the previous generation.

The owner's manual images might indicate m.2 and 2.5" bay occupying the same spot, can anyone confirm?

If that is the case, I think I'll just gonna grab the discounted 5470 or 5570 as I don't need the USB-C port, 140 grams weight reduction nor the Kaby Lake CPU upgrade (have not found any other differences to previous generation yet).
