As I suspected, removing the MX300 2TB and moving back to a 1TB drive (in this case, an 840 EVO mSATA in an adapter as the X400 got reused somewhere else) seems to have fixed the sudden power-off problems when on battery. I miss the disk space, but hey, better to be reliable.

The only thing I haven't tried is sticking to 2TB and dropping the memory; I'd have to buy new memory to go down to 16gb, and at 8gb the machine wouldn't be usable for my work.

edit: spoke too soon. Powered itself off right in a meeting with a coworker :( Going to try going back to the X400, but if not... warranty time.

edit #2: X400 does the same thing. I've ordered a new primary machine (XPS 15 9560) and when that comes in will revert back to stock configuration and then follow up with support. Sadly, I'm just enough past a year that if the problem is the battery it's not going to be covered.

Hi, I have DELL E5450 and I after I read this thread I decided to buy M.2 2242 SSD too. Installed it yesterday and BIOS is not detecting it. Could you please describe what am I missing in my BIOS ? My configuration:

    BIOS version: A15
primary HDD 256GB SSD (shown in BIOS details)
Transcend 512 M.2 2242 GB SSD in WWAN slot (not shown in BIOS details)

general - boot sequence = legacy
    - advanced boot options = enable legacy option ROMs
system configuration - SATA operation = AHCI
    - Drives = SATA-0, SATA-1, SATA-2, SATA-3 (don't see M.2 PCIe SSD-0 just these 4)
secure boot - secure boot enable = disabled
    wireless - wireless device enable = WWAN/GPS, WLAN/WiGig, Bluetooth

I read in some post that I need to disable SATA in order to make WWAN bootable, is that correct ? Is it possible that my E5450 is different from your E5470 and therefore it won't work for me ?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

People have had mixed success with M.2 SSD in the WWAN slot on the 5470 / 5570 and I wonder whether Dell made a BIOS or board changed which stopped the SSD being detected (if so, a strange move given that the capability to run a second SSD is a good selling point) so this doesn't provide a good precedent for the E5450. It depends not only whether the SATA lines in the M.2 socket are connected but also on whether the BIOS is looking for the possibility of an SSD in the WWAN slot.

fortunately my employer could give me E5470, I tried all possible and impossible options with no luck. I noticed that I don't see SATA3 in BIOS - System configuration - Drives, but only that. As discussed it could be because of different motherboards, or maybe components configuration. So at the end I think I will end up with M.2 SATA USB 3.0 adapter with my M.2 SATA drive in it and use Windows To Go and Ubuntu on it. :(

I have not read a single report of the WWAN slot of E5450 working with M.2 2242 SSD

For the E5470, seems like report of success are coming from the H series Processors (Quad Core), both with and without discrete graphics.
I do not recall any success case for the U series processor, and would like to know if anyone with U series processor had any luck.

That's a pertinent observation: The quad core CPUs have a maximum of 16 PCIe lanes whereas the ULV CPUs are limited to 12 (see the Intel specs) which could mean no spare lanes for SATA in the WWAN slot.

I guess it is more about how dell allocates the lanes since a good number of other models could do it.
That includes the Thinkpad Tx40, Tx50, Dell 5280, all of which uses a U series processor.
In Dell lattitude 5280's case, it even has the exact set of storage options as the E5470.

The 5470 / 5570 have a docking port and a dGPU option both of which would need some PCIe lanes allocated in the design.

I don't think the standard Dell E-port dock has any PCI-e lanes attached to it -- the D-series Latitudes were IIRC the last where you could put a PCI card in the dock (the rather rare D/Dock, rather than the much more common D/Port), and the E-series docks are all just (basically) pass through connectors to things already on the motherboard.

Has anyone figured out how to control the fan speed?
