Does anyone know if we can stack both an M2 NVME PCIE SSD with a 2.5 SATA unit ?

In the pictures it seems that adding a 2.5 unit prevent the use of the PCIE port ...

Correct - my work laptop came with M2 in the main slot and there is no way a 2.5 SSD would have fitted at the same time.
I wanted dual drives so I stuck a 256GB Transcend 2242 M.2 in the WWAN slot and all is well.

Wow thanks for the fast reply !

Too bad that the 2.5 unit prevent the use of the faster PCIE port ...

It seems that the only 2 choices are wether go all the way for a big PCIE Samsung 960 evo (500go for instance) or a small PCIE 960evo (128go) for the system with an mSata drive on the WWAN port for all the DATA ..

That is not a mSATA drive, it is a m.2 2242 drive. mSATA has not been used in these type of system since 2015 Broadwell era,
and most manufacturers drop them a year before that for the haswell generation.

Note that these m.2 2242 drive are slower, more expensive and much less available compared to the common m.2 2280 drives

Someone around here said about shutdowns when on battery with 32GB RAM. I experience this problem right now, when battery is on 50% laptop shuts down. I turned off the turbobost in Linux while on battery with TLP. But does not seem to help. Really nasty problem.

Yeah; seemed to get a little better, but not gone entirely, when I moved to a less power-hungry SSD.

At this point, I've pretty much retired mine in favor of the XPS 15, and I should probably just buy another 8GB DIMM and downgrade the machine to 16GB so it's usable. The E5480 officially supports 32GB, although given how closely related the motherboards are, I'd still worry about overcurrent protection kicking in.

So nothing can be done about this?

    Hi,

new user here. Have been owning e5470 for almost a year. My model is i5-6440HQ with the following upgrades:

    RAM: Crucial 32GB Kit (16GBx2) DDR4 2133; CT2K16G4SFD8213
    SSD: Crucial MX200 1TB; CT1000MX200SSD1

My OS is Linux Mint 18, no problems whatsoever. Some reported here power/shutdown issues with 32GB on board while on battery, I am almost 100% on AC so no such observations. I am curious about 2 things though:

    a) does anyone have any experience with 1TB M.2 SSD? In the manual it states that M.2 max is 500GB. They say the same about SATA SSD, and my 1TB SATA works flawlessly. Still, it would be nice to know that 1TB M.2 would behave the same.

    b) anyone tried Crucial MX300 2TB with e5470?

    Thanks!

P.S. If someone needs a cheap M.2 bracket for e5470, they can be found on Ebay (complete set with 4 screws) .

There's no reason why a 1TB (or 2TB) M.2 SSD will not work. I had a 5570 (basically the same platform) for a while and swapped out the supplied 256GB SATA SSD for a 1TB Sandisk X400 without any problem.

Dell tend to list the maximum SSD capacity that they tested during the development stage.

Does somebody use this memory with e5470 http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/latitude-e5470/CT9831001

I am thinking that is is all due to number of chips per slot. All I have are 16 chip modules, two of 16GB and one of 8GB. I tried everything, 8 GB only, 24 GB, 16GB only and 32GB. Shutdowns on battery are happening in any config, even with 8GB only. And yet crucial lists 2400mhz modules with 8 chip each as compatible in 32gb config. Seems to me it is to risky to order and pray. If MintUser can confirm that his memory is working on battery without problems I will order
