True I was expecting lower prices as well.
But you're still lucky if you live in Europe. Sadly I think Poland is on some other continent - there's only one new model (7510) in Dell Poland shop and there's no (significant) discount that is automatically added e.g. in UK or Germany :(

Has the precision 5510 2 or 4 SO-DIMM slots? I also hope that Dell offers more configuration options over the next weeks. For instance, at the moment the maximum pci-e SSD size is 512 GB.

5510 has just two RAM slots for a max capacity of 32 GB. 7510 and 7710 will have four RAM slots.

hi, very likely buyer here. either this or the Thinkpad P50, should it ever ship...

I'm a social scientist who doesn't care about graphics or touchscreens. I just want the fastest chip possible and as much memory and SSD capacity as I can get my hands on. I routinely run data analyses that take hours or even days to execute and can use 10-20G of memory (occasionally more).

I can't seem to find an XPS15 configuration like this, and I think I would prefer the Xeon chip for speed (but maybe that's naïve). I was set on the Thinkpad P50 with its TrackPoint but then noticed that the 5510 is a pound lighter and doesn't have the off-center keyboard. plus, my kid has an XPS13 for college and raves about it. only tradeoff that P50 can do 64G memory, but I will rarely use that much RAM.

I think my best bet is a 5510 with Xeon chip, 32G memory, 1T SSD storage, and matte HD screen. am I missing something or does this sound reasonable?

oh, btw this link is (back) up: says shipping 11-15 days, so for Thanksgiving... http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/precision-m5510-workstation/pd?oc=xctop551015us

Hi, just checked with a Dell rep and he said the RAM capacity is 16GB. Are you sure about the 32GB?

Max 16GB ECC RAM (with Xeon), 32GB Non-ECC RAM.

The 5510 has 2 slots, while the 7510 has 4. They can use the same SO-DIMMs, and as the 7510 has those options, there's no reason the 5510 can't.

The limitation is availability of DDR4 SO-DIMMs, not the chip - the machine itself can handle 64GB RAM, but there are no 32GB DDR4 SO-DIMMs available right now: only 8GB ECC SODIMMS and 16GB Non-ECC.

Speed difference between the i7-6820hq and the Xeon on the 5510 will be negligible. Cost difference isn't much either, so it can't hurt, just depends on your budget.

i7-6820hq or Xeon in the 5510 vs. i7-6700hq in the XPS 15 will be a bigger difference... clock speeds are close but 2MB more cache for workloads like yours could be a big deal.

(OTOH, for thriftier folks, the i7-6700hq is probably a better deal than the i5-6300hq in the base 5510.)

Has anyone been able to take a look at the 5510 in person (or can anyone tell definitely from the pictures) to see if it uses the larger barrel connector from the Latitudes, or the narrower one like the older XPS 15/M3800?

Thought from the pictures like it was the latter, but the ordering page shows a Latitude-style PA-4 130W adapter as the spare you can order with it. I absolutely HATE the connector on my M3800 (it's already loose again, and going to need replacing again in the next couple months! and am also down a power cord already), and if it's got the larger, traditional connector I'll reconsider my decision to rule out the 5510 on that alone.

Still leaning to the 7510, especially given the anti-glare screen and how reasonable the FHD screen is.

How does the 7510 compare to the Lenovo P50?

Want to get a 15 inch laptop and not sure between these options. Think I'll get an XPS 15 though.
If they provided the M2000M in the 5510 I'd go for this, as it's compararable performance to the GTX 960M I believe.

It's likely going to be used on my desk most of the time, but I like the idea that it can be very portable and taken with me if need be.

Obviously the P50 provides a lot more power (and you'd think stronger build), but not sure I need that much power. Although it will be a desktop replacement.
