Am I understanding you guys correctly, in that it seems the new Dell Precision will be called the M7710?

Also, what is MMX and what does it mean when compared to what's in the Lenovo P70?

    Thanks.

I think "MMX" is a misspelling, they actually meant "MXM" which is the type of graphics card used. MXM has been used in Precision for a while.

The Chinese forum is chattering about the P70 as well. Apparently MXM hasn't been confirmed in the M70 but it is generally expected to be used there as well.

And yes, it looks like the new models are M7710 (17") and M7510 (15").

    Thanks, Aaron44126.

My M6600 has the Nvidia Quadro 4000M, which is pretty dated now, and I thought the P70 also had the brand new top of the range Nvidia Quadro in it too, or am I getting totally confused by the MXM terminology?

I wonder what the thinking behind the name change is? Are they trying to reinforce the message of just how much of an upgrade this new version over previous versions? It will surely have lots of very cutting edge technology.

Quadro's are specific GPU's, which can come in a few form factors - MXM is the form factor.

Yeah perhaps my statement was a little confusing. MXM is the form factor, which defines the size of the card, where the holes for screws/supports go, and the port that it connects to on the motherboard. Both NVIDIA and AMD make a variety of cards (including the Quadro) that use the MXM form factor.

One cool thing about MXM in a workstation is it gives the possibility of upgrading the GPU in the future, since you can swap your card with another MXM card. In practice this doesn't always work out — the heatsink has to line up perfectly with the new GPU, and sometimes the BIOS doesn't agree with it also.

The Precision M4X00 and M6X00 machines have used MXM for a while (at least as long as I've been paying attention, since M4500/M6500).

As stated under the picture, they are actually 2280. The two screw positions indicate that you can install and secure both sizes (42 mm and 80 mm).

BTW, there are more M.2 sizes out there (30 mm, 60 mm, 110 mm).

I hope we get a picture of the chassis soon. Can't wait to see it...

This could also be a new branch under the Precision Mobile tree. If these are actually the successors of the M4800 and M6800, Dell has apparently abonded a naming scheme they have used for many years.

Well, clearly they'd run out of names after the next generation; after 3/4/6900, there's no more 3/4/6x00 they can do. Might as well change the naming scheme now.

    How about 6A00, 6B00, ... or simply M7000, M7100... ?

M77x0 doesn't leave many iterations either.

I wonder what they'll do with the M2800 and M3800.

So with that news I guess we can expect those new models sometime between Sept-December?

Perhaps, but frankly the M6600, M6700, M6800 or even M7700, M8800 is a lot easier to remember and refer to than the M7710.

Mind you what it is called is of little importance.

Is Bokeh (member) still around? He used to do the most amazing break downs of the M6X00 line.
