Yes. I believe so. Because when I called them asking about Windows 8.1 Pro factory re-installation media for the Lenovo Thinkpad X240, the support rep said I was the first person he had heard call in to request 8.1 factory media. (The notebooks came with Win8.1 Pro stickers and licenses but with Win 7 installation media and Win 7 on the SSDs). In talking with Lenovo since then, I don't get a sense that business demand has changed. Businesses are still demanding Windows 7.

I have been using Windows 10 since Feb of this year. I, too, feel that Windows 8.1 provides the best display scaling experience. Windows 10 is in second place ahead of Windows 7 though (in my opinion). Some legacy apps benefit from a non-standard ratio:

    Like 120% instead of 125% (125-5).
    Or 145% instead of 150% (150-5).
    Or 195% instead of 200% (200-5)
    and so on.

From what I've seen, Windows 8.1 and 10 can do this but Windows 7 cannot (please correct me if I am wrong).

I really hope so. I can't see many areas that they could improve on over the P70.

I was not excited to upgrade my M6600 to the M6700, nor did the M6800 seem like enough of the upgrade. But if Dell's M6900 is similar (or dare I say better) to Lenovo's ThinkPad P70, then I am definitely going to be upgrading. And if it's not, then I will likely still upgrade, only not to the Dell!

    Very excited indeed!

Even if they can't improve on specs, they may be able to improve on build quality, ease of maintenance / upgradeability, and support. This is what drew me to the Precision line for my M6700.

Glad to see Lenovo offering a 17" workstation again. They had dropped it when I was shopping around for the M6700. Also glad to see high-DPI showing up at 17".

Hopefully Dell (and HP as well) announce details of new workstations soon.

[QUOTE="I am sure Dell will respond to that Lenovo Thinkpad P70, am just not sure how much room there is for them to improve on those specs.[/QUOTE]

yes, I agree not much room to improve I mean right down to the (and finally) 17" 4k notebook. I wonder if Dell will have the option of having a SSD/HDD combination? for example the SSD + a 500GB 7200RPM (thats all I need)
I have to read more on Lenovo's specs but not sure if they offer a configuration of that combination (feel free to correct me if I am wrong)

However again that Lenovo Thinkpad P70 will be hard to improve upon.

Considering some folks still have 10 year old consumer laptops in use, buying a workstation every year is just throwing away money. There's just not that much of a change (nor is it suppose to be) in these types of machines every year.

At this point, nothing less than a revolutionary change i.e. OLED 4k display, beyond 32 GB ram capacity, 50%+ increase in graphic capability -- would compel me to consider moving to upgrade. These are true reasons to upgrade a workstation (keeping pace with technology; doubling work output; 32 to 64 bit, etc.) not minor cosmetic changes. Unless of course, you have more money than you know what to do with? I'm a working stiff myself.

Amen. I'd say a new workstation is justified every three to four years, depending on how intensively it's used, and who's paying for the upgrade.

If they're going to use Xeon CPUs, I think the chassis will remain the same then.

wow, I've not considered a mobile Xeon! That blows my mind. That, in my opinion, is a major breakthough and it opens up a whole new world of possibilities.

Possibly more than 4 cores? Possibly more than 64GB ram? I need to do my research about these new mobile Skylake Xeons and that new Lenovo P70.

*edit: wait a moment! 64GB?! at first that didn't register with my brain correctly. I was reading that as 32GB. 64GB is a HUGE jump! I'm very pleased although the price will probably be exuberant for a 16GB sodimm memory module.
