"16:10" has lost some of its meaning for me with all of the recent super high density pixel displays. To me it used to mean that 16:10 has 1920 pixels across and 1200 pixel down and 16:9 meant 1920x1080. I really appreciate those extra 120 vertical pixels. But I get confused with all these high res displays today and which one I should prefer. Do I care if it is 16:10 or do I instead care that I have at least a 1920x1200 or better experience with whatever ratio best displays that experience. I just want at least as much real estate I had with older 16:10 1920x1200 pixel displays, but without having a high density display scale poorly where it looks like crap or requires me to squint because the font looks too small.

I usually use an external monitor at the office and at home. But on the laptop itself I'd prefer to get at least the 1920x1200 experience I get from my trusty old m6500. I'm cringing if I have to get a 1080p vertical display.

1920x1200 is known as QUXGA (1600x1200 was UXGA and 1024 x768 was known as XGA)
1920x1080 is known as FHD (Full HD).

It makes it more clear when you use the acronyms or the exact resolution numbers.

Here is a tool you can play with: https://www.sven.de/dpi/

Then you want something 2560x1440 (WQHD) or better. Other options are 3K and 4K (aka Ultra HD) and 5K displays. However once you start getting into that territory you are going to need scaling. To get proper scaling, you are starting to need to look as O/Ss after Windows 7. This includes Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. Both had better scaling options and Windows 7. One of the issue is legacy apps. I get around that in various ways, none ideal, but all are workable.

Ideally where I think you (my opinion only, and this is an opinion I take for myself) is you may want a 2560x1440 or a 5120x2880 display (195% or 200% scaling) in the future. This gives you 1440 pixels in vertical real estate. That would be a monster to have in a 17.3 inch or a 18.4 inch platform!!! This is what I would buy if it were available today! I think *THIS* is your improvement (And compromise) over 1920x1200.

I think the answer to that (assuming OS and app support isn't there for proper scaling) is for a 1440 pixel tall display.

The FHD display (1920x1080) is not so bad. I have that in my M6800. I am not going to argue over 120 pixels. I much rather have the i7-4940mx processor over the i7-902xm processor in the M6500. Life is a series of compromises. It depends you get what is important to you when you choose your tools.

Here's my datapoint. I miss the 7-row keyboards and the trackpoint in the Lenovo Thinkpads. I am not sure those are coming back. But staying with older hardware (For me) wasn't an option. So in a way I understand where you are coming from.

What I would like to see in the M6900? Fix the trackpoint / pointing stick.

Also, what is up with the Anti-glare coating in the M6800 touch display? Why is it so "frosted" looking? A less aggressive coating would be nice. I would have preferred the touch display from the Alienware 17 R2, had that been an option in the M6800. I know it is glossy. But the AG coating in the M6800 is just bad. Bad . Bad. I'd rather have the glossy Alienware panel if this anti-glare panel is the best Dell can do in the Precision.

Oh yes! Incredible. Let's hope Dell's are as good, as the P70 really sounds terrific.

A couple of news stories for those that have not read about them yet.

I am very excited about what the M6900 will feature, I really hope Dell does not disappoint. Not after what Lenovo has just unveiled!!

    Bring it on!

Interesting. Will Lenovo still ship their professional machines with Windows 7, as Dell does? If they do, then they're in the running. We'll see how the M6900 comes out. Unfortunately, there's no hope of 16x10 making a comeback and, no, resolution is no cure for this disease...

P.S.: From what I hear, Windows 10 has severe scaling issues that make it the worst choice as of right now. Even Win8.1 does better in that respect. Neither is an option for me.

I believe I saw win 8.1 w/ 7pro downgrade rights listed as an OS choice in one of the articles I read this morning.

I definitely would want the machine to come with Windows 10. I would not buy a new laptop, even that P70 monster from Lenovo, unless it had Windows 10.

I am on Windows 10 now and it is much better than Windows 7.

I am sure Dell will respond to that Lenovo Thinkpad P70, am just not sure how much room there is for them to improve on those specs.
