    Maybe I wasn't very clear:

Scenario 1: hdmi cable alone... that works for 4K @30Hz (tested, works fine)
Scenario 2: the 'bulky connector' type cable that you mentioned, DP-hdmi... works for FHD @60Hz (tested, works fine; can't go to 4K at all)
Scenario 3: pigtail DP-hdmi convertor with the hdmi cable from scenario 1... works for FHD @60Hz (tested, works fine; can't go to 4K at all)

I conclude that the hdmi cable from scenario 1 and 3 (the same cable) does support 4K... but either the laptop's DP-port or the pigtail don't support 4K; last possibility is that the laptop's DP-port does support 4K but I have a wrong setting somewhere which prevents the port from outputting 4K... though I have no idea which setting I could have missed that does allow 4K through hdmi but not through DP :(

(the pigtail convertor is HP 612873-001 ; I don't really see any specs of this thing)

The 4K port on the M6800 does support 4K, other users on this thread have been using it (though usually with a 4K monitor that supports DisplayPort --- not sure I've seen any DP->HDMI success stories).

The HP 612873-001 was available at Amazon on May 7, 2013. (Note, the adapter may have been available earlier than that, this is just Amazon's "I first saw it" date.) HDMI 2.0 wasn't finalized until September, 2013. So at the very least, it is too old for 4K/60Hz. Same may go for your 'bulky connector' cable.

An HDMI cable itself doesn't have to specifically support HDMI 2.0... As long as it is decent quality, it will work with 4K. DP->HDMI adapters are "active", as in there is hardware inside that actually does the format conversion, so they will have to specifically support HDMI 2.0 to get 4K/60Hz.

Thanks, even though that's not very positive news for me; I'll try to search ebay for a convertor pigtail thingie that actually does what I want... darn, like trying to find the Holy Grail!

    Hello,
So I just got a Precision M6800 working on doing some upgrades to it. Here is the story. I got it from Ebay for $700. The Bios Version A02.

    Current specs

    4900MQ Processor
    32GB Ram 1600MHz PC3L
    AMD M6100 Video
    500GB 5400RPM Traditional HHD
    Non Lighted Keyboard
    No Webcam
    17.3 FHD
    Windows 10 Pro

    Upgrades

    4910MQ Processor (Completed)
    Lighted Keyboard (Completed)
Webcam (Completed , Just need bezel now)

    *******************
    The issue is that I have 2 512GB SSD's and a 250GB mSATA Drive

Main SSD is recognized in BIOS , 2nd SSD is not recognized in BIOS, I have not tried the mSATA yet.

Is this a common problem on the M6800, if is what is a probable solution to fix this? If it is not a problem what are your suggestions to remedy it.

I am going to update the BIOS to A15.

    *******************

Traditionally I work on Latitude E6440 and E6540 which are a completely different animal in its self. I have repair and fixed around a 100 of these. I buy and sell on Ebay as a side business. And I am completely self taught on what I have learned. But this is my first M6800 or Precision that I am working on.
