Guess I should have said, I know how to physically repaste and replace the cpu, I mean any software issues (bios etc)

There are no BIOS issue that would prevent this.

I'm not sure about the M6800, but with the M6700, units shipped with the i7 3920XM or 3940XM came with a special heatsink with three copper pipes, while units shipped with the lower CPUs came with a heatsink with two copper pipes. If M6800 has something similar, you might want to look into sourcing the better heatsink as well. Not sure how you would tell unless you can find a photo of the inside of someone's system who had it shipped with the 4910 CPU.

(We had a whole thread about this on the M6700. Pictures are broken now, unfortunately.)

In any case, worst that would happen if you don't have the little-bit-better heatsink is that it wouldn't be able to stay in turbo mode forever.

Thank you very much. I've been through Dell's service manuals before and they seemed pretty good at identifying the part numbers and differences. I'll have to download one for the m6800. Just to be sure, the above would hold true going from an i5 to i7?

Yes, you can upgrade from any CPU to any CPU (as long as it is supported by the platform, i.e. ones that originally shipped in the M6800). If you go from dual-core to quad-core you will even gain the ability to use all four memory slots instead of two.

    I've upgraded 2x M6800s from i5 4200m to 4710mq and 4810mq, all went well.

I was able to do the upgrade on the 900p panel to the 1080p panel without issue. No LVDS cable change needed.

Anyone here using Win10 on M6800, last two times I tried my battery was draining way faster than on W7. I believe main culprit was M6100 not completely switching off and sucking extra 10W/h in lowest power state. I'm wondering if that is fixed at this point.

I have discovered a new HSF for the Nvidia cards for the M6800 on AliExpress. I bought one from the seller in the link below. Just make sure he take photos of the HSF that he is sending you. I got a dodgy one from him and he refused to refund until AliExpress stepped in.

It does not need any modification required for use on the GTX980M. However, you do need the necessary thermal pads/paste (especially the 5mm or greater ones) to reach the VRM chips.

I am now using it on my M6800 with a GTX980M.
